My outdoor drain looks like this and is quite smelly. Is this a problem? Is it something I can fix myself?

Smelly? Is it your gutter pipe, or your bathroom pipe? Boke if it's the latter.

It's probably blocked. Lift up the black plastic cover on the ground and have a good rummage. There'll probably be a load of leaves jammed down there. With any luck, the drain should start running freely once you've fished out the rubbish.

If you can't find a blockage yourself, you'll need to get a man out. There'll probably be a blockage further down the drain that he'll dislodge with a long bendy rod or a water jet. Expect to pay anything from £80 to £200 depending on how bad the blockage is. If you're a tenant, it's your landlord's responsibility to get it sorted, but he might not be arsed.

You could try throwing some Caustic Soda down there before calling Dynorod out. I should cost less than a fiver - just follow the instructions closely, caustic soda can burn pretty bad.
