3298 Lock
There's a shared garbage bay for the block of flats I live in. It's always been locked, the code is listed in the stair case. The lock no longer has the code listed or is broken. Short of taking an angle grinder to it, is there any way to get this open?

The fastest thing to try would be to ask your landlord if he's changed the code. Failing that, try 0205. I tried every combination on a lock outside my house when I bought it, and that was the code, and when I boasted of this achievement to someone I know, he said he used to be really into lockpicking and that 0205 is often a default code that works on most locks. He is a monumental bullshit merchant, however, so this might not be true.

Your friend is bullshitting. There is no default code on locks like that. They usually start with 0000 or 9999.

Those locks are quite easy to pick. Start with the first barrel, put some pressure on the loop, you should feel a faint click as you get the right code - its quite imperceptible at first, but if you put tension on the loop when you do it, you'll feel each pin drop as you find the right number.

Lockpicking is fun, lots of us do it as a hobby.

That manipulation attack is usually quite easy with a bit of practice, but if you can't get it to work then you can open most padlocks with a drinks can and a pair of scissors.

I did a cursory search to see if it was easy to pick, but the only video I found suggested inserting a thin angled bit over each tumbler to feel where it slots in. Tried that, I have scalpel blades for model making and they are too thick to fit, cut up a drinks can and it fits in 3/4 of the things and does not appear stiff enough for this purpose.

Trouble is, I can't tell if the code has changed or if the lock broke somehow. I could spend a few hours trying each combination, but if its broken then that would be wasted time.

Bolt croppers are the better option.

All good lads. Not sure how, but there's a new lock on the bay now. Same code.
