I'm socially inept and didn't really get close many people during my time at university, including tutors. However, my personal tutor has been kind enough to write references for me, one of which was for a postgraduate programme. I've read it and now think I owe my position on the programme to this statement, it really shined.

What's the best way of saying thank you for this? We met only a handful of times, but I do want to recognise how much it swayed admissions. I ask because I'm not sure what's appropriate. Would an e-mail be enough to show my appreciation?

I think a written letter with a small present (less than £15) would be good. One of my professors was given a small bottle of spirits a student had made himself as a thank-you gift I think.

Well done on getting your postgrad programme lad.

I think the best gift for this situation is a small lasting memento, something that can sit in his office like a little trophy. It's nice to be reminded of your successes when you're having a bad day at work. Something like a paperweight, letter-opener or bookmark would be ideal. It doesn't have to be expensive, but it should be thoughtfully chosen. If you can't think of anything, you can get a Parker pen with an engraved message for about £15 on eBay.

Failing that, opt for a hand-written card or note, it shows a great deal more thought than an e-mail.

By using "shone" not "shined.

My reading is that the OP's meaning is that the statement is highly polished rather than actively emitting light, in which case "shined" is correct.

That would also be "shone", wouldn't it?

Both are used, but I'm of the opinion that "shined" would be the correct usage, e.g. "his boots were well shined" rather than "his boots were well shone".

Ah but he said "it shined" rather than "was well shined". The reference was well shined, so it shone.

She looks exactly like a girl I knew back in secondary school. The place on the photo looks a lot like a cafeteria in the hostel she lived while attending Uni.
And she's Belarusian, not Russian, if that's her.

OP here. Just thought I'd update and say that I thank you all for the advice. A friend actually suggested sweet confectionery of some kind. This friend was American and recommended brownies. They come in a box.

Most people would be happy to receive this, right?

Anyway, I'll get her something when the next term has started.

You'd have to be a right cunt to not be pleased at a gift of brownies (so long as they're not like something featured on Ashens).
