21874 Youtube Recommendations
The other thread got me wondering about what youtube channels you lads can recommend. Topic can be anything, just what you find to be good and interesting to watch.

Learning:
>Issac Arthur
I posted one of his videos awhile ago but it's well worth repeating. Every Thursday he does a really interesting and in-depth look at science and futurism concepts and does a really good job of explaining them simply but also covering the unnoticed drawbacks and benefits.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7fLNvpl0c8

>ElectroBOOM
He has kind of gone to shit over the past few months but this is still a good channel for basic electrical engineering fun.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7foDiXX-CcE

>Tom Scott
Mostly for his 'Things You Might Not Know' series. He goes over some pretty interesting things that you might never notice but are all around us.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mm5khEUIBx0

Music:
>Marcel The Drunkard
Contemporary Jazz albums with influences all over the place.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=327WA_s4mhM

>Rare & Unfamiliar Music Hunt
Rare albums from around the world and probably your best sauce for classic Afrobeat and the sounds of the former Eastern Bloc.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsnG0P8v_5E

>Du Matin au Soir
Mostly ambient, minimalist and experimental albums. It's good if you're doing a bit of work and don't want to sit in silence.

Dry, witty videos about philosophy and psychology.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mheHbVev1CU

>Wendover Productions
Basically a slightly longer version of Things You Might Not Know, with a mild bias towards transport-related topics. See also the sister channel Half as Interesting.

https://www.youtube.com/user/Wendoverproductions/videos
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuCkxoKLYO_EQ2GeFtbM_bw/videos

>School of Life
Pretentious but useful videos by Alain de Botton about emotional intelligence and applied psychology.
https://www.youtube.com/user/schooloflifechannel/videos

>Nerdwriter1
Mainly deep dives into screenwriting and film directing, occasionally other topics.
https://www.youtube.com/user/Nerdwriter1/videos

>FR Hamilton
A massive archive of old British documentaries and OU programmes.

https://www.youtube.com/user/9santarosa/videos

>Nuclear Vault
Old military training films, newsreels and other ephemera of interest to war nerds.

>Binging with Babish
Great for those of you wanting to know how to cook or get the most out of your kitchen equipment for his new "Basics with Babish" series and frequent livestreams. He's self taught and his camerawork makes the whole experience feel a lot clearer and more interactive than most cooking shows.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJHA_jMfCvEnv-3kRjTCQXw

>Big Clive
YouTube's resident Scotch tinkerer. Teardowns of rudimentary electronics that are somehow engaging and informative with just the right amount of funny.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtM5z2gkrGRuWd0JQMx76qA

>Mark Brown
Last of the greats from the heyday of gaming journalism. Mark's busying himself with a great informative series called Game Maker's Toolkit that really gets to grips with the nuanced design choices and player experience in hit titles. Particularly interesting is his rundown of the Legend of Zelda series' dungeon levels. Even if you're not much of a gamer, it's still worth watching for his captivating understanding of the interactive design experience.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqJ-Xo29CKyLTjn6z2XwYAw

>No Small Parts
Fan-made documentary series about C-list / bit-part character actors and their careers. Some interesting guest pieces and just a great insight into the recesses of Hollywood most are quick to brush under the rug. I recommend Brandon Hardesty's old impressions and improv videos too if you're looking for a laugh.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7sg9FpMWMamzWE2lJPY-Dg

>Townsends
17th century cooking channel. The host's a genuinely interesting and humble chap and his videos are great for learning about history while you relax. All there is to it really.

British guy mostly talking about history, a lot of WWI, WWII, and medieval, with a focus on tactics. He's also quite funny.

>Techmoan
This guy used to do a lot of (very good) reviews of dashcams and action cams. Now he is mostly focused on hi-fi equipment, with a lot of interesting videos about obscure and obsolete formats.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4K1QKKPX_g&ab_channel=Techmoan

>AvE
Mad Canadian Engineer.
Destructive tool testing. Swearing. Always something to learn from him if you have any sort of interest in mechanics and engineering (in particular he hates shill reviews of things and will tell you exactly how much something is worth). Always highly entertaining.

The gold plating is stupid, but the cable is less than a tenner on Amazon. Anyone got $7,200 for an audio interconnect cable? They're dead good. You'll hear a soundstage and warmth unlike any other cable you've ever used, I promise. Comes with a free bridge.

>Tom Scott
I always presumed I liked him I really liked I remember being amused by his welcome to life video years ago, but I keep on finding videos of him explaining that there are exceptions to a rule that he presents really badly.

They all go the exact same way

"This is a thing that is understood by this quite simple concept but there is an exception to the rule, but then there is another exception to the rule, but then there is THIS exception to the rule, but then all that is fine, but there is an exception to the rule, and once you've understood all that there is an exception to the rule, so in conclusion it is this but then there is an exception to the rule."
None of the exceptions seemed that hard to wrap my head around, in fact he has done it for fields I've worked in, but his presentation is as if he were revealing some daunting truth that you should never even bother trying to understand in the first place like niche knowledge were some sort of elder god that must not be disturbed from it's slumber at any cost. This is a prime example

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5wpm-gesOY

I think my problem is I don't like it when authors repeatedly produce video essays that follows the same structure, it feels like he went out of his way to try make the thing sound more complicated and dramatic just because that is the way he puts on a performance. I think his style actually discourages learning, as he makes things sound like these things are too intimidating to even try.

As a software developer, I can tell you that he understated the difficulty and complexity of handling time zones. They're one of the trickiest problems in distributed database systems and have caused horrendously expensive bugs. The weirdness of how humans keep track of time has some really nasty interactions with the PACELC theorem. Like crypto, it's something that 99.9% of developers should never handle themselves, because it's just too easy to fuck up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PACELC_theorem

Most of Tom Scott's videos on his own channel don't fit the template that you described. He mostly talks about cool research infrastructure (Built for Science) or quirky little bits of trivia (Things You Might Not Know).

I think his overall message is really positive. Science and technology is often presented in a really dry, didactic way, but he shows that it's full of unexpected surprises. He shows that science isn't a body of knowledge guarded by an elite, but a dynamic system of exploration and discovery.

>Gamesack
Retro gaming for adults.

>CPG Grey
I know some of you don't like him because of his mistakes in videos but I think on the whole it's quite informative/interesting.

>Vsauce
Does a lot of videos on phenomena, the earlier stuff was more interesting.

>TeamFourStar

Honorable mentions:

alltime10s. Like a cracked article in video form. I haven't watched these for a while but I used to like them.

Steveo from jackass.

LAHWF - famous for his awkward "prank" videos, he's tried to move away from the persona in recent years and at least he doesn't do fake stuff and act like a douche.

I just started watching Cool World, an astronomy professor who is uncomfortably handsome talks through new discoveries by his research team and covers some more general concepts - sometimes backed by actual papers he writes.

I liked this one as an intro:

If we live in a Möbius strip universe and you took some FTL spaceships in a circuit you would arrive home to find things would be off. You'd notice everyone's faces look slightly odd, clocks would tick backwards and when doctors examine you your heart will be on the wrong side. Everyone would claim that their left and right are correct and that you must be an alien but really it's because you've mirrored.

Youtube is a pile of wank. I spent two tedious afternoons going through the youtube bookmarks I'd accrued over the past few months, and 90% of them were pointless. They mostly fell into these categories: 1) things that are momentarily interesting that I'll forget after I've watched the video with the clickbaity title, 2) genuinely interesting topics that are glossed over because of the shallow nature of the medium or because the 'content creator' is trying to sell you something. The 10% of videos that were actually worth watching were from youtubers who weren't really trying to make a living from it.

The old adage of 90% of everything being shit still holds true, but youtube is a particularly sinister pile of wank because it tricks you into thinking that you're spending your most valuable resource wisely. Sinister infotainment!

The internet is only good for complaining about the internet. And porn.

I like to have a spooky channel to watch but they all seem to devolve into true crime which I find dull. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Stuff like:

Be. Busta is also okay if you just want reddit larps told in a spooky narration:

Weird World is kind of spooky, although some of their content is a bit laughable. They focus a lot on reincarnation, ghosts, time travel and hauntings.

Barely Sociable (and his 2nd channel Slightly Sociable) are good for long form documentaries on spooky mystery type stuff.
Nexpo occasionally veers into true crime but it's mainly spooky stuff, ARGs and internet mysteries
blameitonjorge is a mixture of spooky stuff, mysteries and lost media.

> Technology Connection
Ridiculously in-depth videos about mostly domestic appliances. If you ever wondered about the history gas lamps, or think you could use a few hours of video about air conditioning and heat pumps, this is for you.
https://www.youtube.com/c/TechnologyConnections

> Practical Engineering
Breaks down large scale infrastructure projects, both how they work and how they sometimes fail. Not a prolific poster but just in depth enough that someone like me who knows nothing about civil engineering can still follow along.
https://www.youtube.com/c/PracticalEngineeringChannel

> Unreported World
Well produced foreign affairs programs (as seen on Channel 4) about often overelooked issues.
https://www.youtube.com/c/unreportedworld

> 12tone
Serious music theory breakdowns of (usually) modern songs, delightfully illustrated. I find it soothing to listen to, even though I have no musical background.

Bit camp, but he's good fun. Although he tends to lose me on his more elaborate technological explanations. He probably has a solid engineering degree of some description, but he can be hard to follow here and there.

If you're into obsolete technology, especially obscure audio formats and similar things, then Technoman Techmoan is your guy. His is a more hands-on approach, he often likes to take things apart to see how they work and fix them. Usually very entertaining.

I've been enjoying Budget Museum, a channel done in the style of old youtube videos of a nerd talking about stuff to a slideshow. It has the humour of a guy you'd meet on an RTS or fantasy MMO in the early 00s:

And then there's Rational Animations which is kind of stupid as you'd expect by the name but it covers things that have fallen into vogue like grabby aliens:

The Rational Animations thing bugs me; it's full of mathematical shit and calls itself "rational" but they're all based on guessing. The Grabby Alien hypothesis won't hold true if the Dark Forest universe hypothesis is true or all sorts of other possibilities. I don't see it as very rational to be spending hours working out the precise equations of probability relating to "grabby aliens" when we know that we don't have all the relevant information and there can be all sorts of other factors involved. It's putting a huge amount of effort on top of what's basically just a guess, pretending that's rational then patting themselves on the back for being so intelligent. I notice the most recent video is based on something by Yudkowsky which really confirms it; these "Rationalist" types are a sort of pseudointellectual cargo cult.

Can't help feeling it was a bit of a case of the guy's own ego getting him killed though. He wasn't retrieving the body for the family, he wanted to be a hero. Good on the other bloke for staying level headed and getting everyone else out safe though, even with decompression sickness, top lad.

I really enjoy the channel Dive Talk, with its two hosts Gus and Woody, who are seasoned experienced diving instructors and certified cave divers. They have great reaction videos as well as videos of their own dives, which they discuss in an always very entertaining way.

It's fun though. And the idea is that you're using the limited data to rationally draw conclusions on questions that have immense significance.

I'm sure it's fun to think about but it's not rational to make predictions based on information you know to be flawed. Speculate away but dressing it up as serious sensible intellectual work is delusional.

I'd just like to cast my vote in support of the anti-rational poster here. Anyone who actively describes themselves as "rational" is by definition implying that others are not rational; nobody ever describes themselves as having two legs. Obviously it is possible for normal people to be rational, but the look-how-rational-I-am squad are almost universally fedora-tipping atheists of the absolute worst sort.

I wasn't aware of it but from what I can tell there's been some internet drama where two youtubers did the irresponsible thing and shacked up only for it to inevitably go horribly wrong. Made worse by the Dutch police then being criminally incompetent in 2016 when his ex accused him of being a rapist.

Given it's 2023 and he last did a video a couple months ago I imagine it's fine, I guess?

Voices of the Past is great. The concept is simple enough, someone's read the interesting written accounts of people in the past who witnesses events or go on adventures.

The Chinese Perspective on 1950s American Life is pretty funny, especially hearing him discover love, women's fashion and how democracy works:
