One of the best films of the decade IMO, Phoenix's acting was phenomenal and it had a really important message which is worth paying attention to.

I don't think this film is available to normal people yet.

I assume he means people who don't get invited to preview screenings, but the poster in the OP says "October 4th".

Haven't seen it myself, being normal and all, but when I saw the trailer a couple of months ago I thought "looks like King of Comedy" and Kermode said it was like King of Comedy on the radio so I guess I'm dead smart at films like.

Not sure I really needed a comic book version of a good Scorsese film.

I'm not sure it's still the case, but at one time there were previews and there were "previews". For some reason the film industry is adamant that releases happen on Friday, so you went through this phase of "Out Friday, preview screenings Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday".

In terms of actual previews (for press, etc., as opposed to "previews"), one local cinema would happily tell anyone that asked what was coming and sell tickets for them on the day, but stopped the practice after a couple of hundred people turned out on the morning of one particular preview screening.

It's just a statistical fiddle. An official box office week runs from Friday to Thursday, but there's nothing in the rules against having loads of previews so you hit the ground running on opening weekend. Lengthy previews are usually a sign of confidence by the studio, because they expect positive word-of-mouth and social media hype; if they just open on a Friday, the studio is probably more confident in the trailer than the actual movie.

Joker has had a mixed reception with critics but has gone down well with audiences, so I'd expect to see loads of previews to offset the bad reviews.

The reviews of Joker seem to become very politicised, as in people disliking it and wanting it to bomb because they've decided it's an chronic masturbator fantasy.

Reviews certainly get politicised at times. I finally got round to watching Get Out the other day, expecting it to be a modern horror classic. It turned out to be a very competently made but otherwise ordinary horror film, one that was never actually frightening or particularly creative. Throughout the whole thing you are however bludgeoned with racial themes as subtle as a half-brick in a sock, which is surely the only explanation for its rave reviews.

So ultimately the film rather proved its own point about how modern white Americans are so mysteriously gaga about black people.

Reviews certainly get politicised at times. I finally got round to reading 1984 the other day, expecting it to be a modern scientific fantasy classic. It turned out to be a very competently written but otherwise ordinary scientific fantasy book, one that was never actually fantastical or particularly creative. Throughout the whole thing you are however bludgeoned with political themes as subtle as a half-brick in a sock, which is surely the only explanation for its rave reviews.

So ultimately the book rather proved its own point about how modern middle classes are so mysteriously gaga about the proletariat.

I was making the point that criticising a political piece of media and criticising the critics for "politicising" it is pretty daft. Not that 1984 is a particularly stellar piece of storytelling outside of the political stuff.

Saw this today, It was all right. Definitely glad I watched it. I'd give it a 7/10. Phoenix's acting was pretty good, disturbing to watch at parts, couldn't help but wince at some of the more uncomfortable scenes.

I think the media have taken this out of proportion though.

People have clearly forgotten how fucked up films have been only a decade or so ago. American Psychopath and The Exorcist come to mind.

I think people are so used to seeing shite like Spiderman 4, Crash Bang Ghost Scare and A Cars Tale: A Disney's Pixar Cry For Help that anything a little odd is just beyond comprehension for them. Obviously that's not all you find in cinemas, but Joker being called Joker means it's going to attract the audience who don't want anything different and only usually watch what Martin Scorsese recently called "theme parks". I don't mean to sound like a tryhard cinema snob, because I'm very much not, but Avengers: Endgame made about as much money as the Spanairds stole from the Mesoamericans and there's a seven hour long version of it on Amazon, so this is where film audiences are at right now regardless of how you or I feel about it.

I looked Scorsese's up to check I'd spelt his name correctly I hadn't and by God that man looks old. Shame.

OK, first of all, if you want to make a serious point about how something is portrayed in the media, don't back it up by linking to the fucking Mail.
