This is very much what the kids these days call "cope". The thing is even if you do something for yourself, nearly everything still requires external validation. That's why it always stays within some boundary of taste and fashion.

I mean, sure, in terms of ultimate satisfaction, it's for themselves, to boost their own ego. But it's only measured as successful if men (or women if they swing that way) find it attractive. Thus either way, it's still absolutely for men. This applies to all of us. Whatever you do to try and make yourself attractive, the goal might be making yourself feel good, but that is ultimately always contingent on other people agreeing that what you have done looks good.

Bodybuilders are a good comparison because they usually start out thinking they are doing it for women, when really they are doing it for themselves; but eventually discover they want the validation to come from other buff men.
