I remember it quite well.

It was an uncommonly good September morning and me and my friend Scott decided we were going to go fishing rather than go to School. I was 15, last year of High School. It was a great day and we talked about life and how this would be probably as good as it got for us as there were no jobs anywhere near us.

We waited until school was done + and appropriate amount time to justify why we had fishing gear and wandered home. Went in, got cleaned up and was making myself a sandwich when Scott burst in the back door (He just lived round the corner) exclaiming "Have you seen the telly?!"

So, we sat watching the rolling coverage until my Dad got in from Work and told us to turn it off and made us both promise never to trust the news and never join the Army. My Dad and Scott's were friends and both being ex-squaddies so I thought this was strange coming from him, but in hindsight he probably knew what was coming.

He is adamant to this day that America did it to themselves, I don't really know what to think.

Actually, I'm sure you'll be sickened to know, I'm a lab technician. I got an A in Chemistry despite my truancy. I now design and risk assess experiments for undergrad student for a large University and do all the grunt work like moving equipment about and making up stock solutions from batch.

I also have to wheel cabinets full of microscopes about and clean up after labs, do the washing (well, the work experience kids do the washing, but still), etc, but that is not my sole responsibility as a lab tech. It may seem a strange thing, that a team given so much responsibility are expected to clean beakers, but that is just the job.

I don't know about Chemistry, but in biology you get 2 types of "techs". One are basically contractual students, that get no degree, and do projects then fuck off, the other are autoclave slaves that wheel thousands of bottles of media / buffers / other sterile goods in an out of the lab. It's a very miserable job from the looks of it and it seems like something that would grind you down after a year or so.

The poor tech lass in the other lab got a really bad whiff of some solvent a daft cunt put in the autoclave by accident.
