Is it possible to set up a direct debit to a family member? And no I don't mean a standing order.

Why would you want a family member to be able to just take money out of your account? Unless they can satisfy the requirements to become a DD originator then no, it won't be possible.

Since you don't normally need to have direct debits to switch accounts, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess the OP is trying to get a promotional offer that he's not eligible for. That might amount to fraud, and the bank may take retaliatory action.

DD laundering services do exist - one of my suppliers uses
https://gocardless.com/features/
and pricing for a scamming weasel like OP looks like it might be tolerable

No idea what you need to provide to set it up, though.

If you're willing to go to that sort of lengths just to switch accounts, just find a couple of cheap things like magazine subscriptions or grazes boxes that you can cancel in a couple of months.

I'll bet that for the length of time they need to be active that would exceed the value of whatever bonus he's trying to scam.

Set up a direct debit to a charity for £1*.

*You can do it for 1p but the charity is charged £1 per transaction via direct debit, so don't be a cunt.

That's quite the leap you've made there. I only have 1 current account with two direct debits. I don't want to do anything fraudulent. Guess I'll pay for they gym by DD and maybe do the charity thing I guess.

We're not stupid. You don't need 4 DD to switch accounts. Never have, never will. Therefore there must be some other reason you're looking to set them up. If you really want to bank with the Co-op, I'm sure they'll let you switch without 4 DD, they just won't give you the cash switching bonus or the monthly cashback.

Can't you set up a DD to your own paypal account?

It needs to be "active" so he'd have to spend some cash, and that would eat into the chicken nugget money he's trying to blag out of the Co-op.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but this is somewhat related and maybe someone can give me a quick answer. Can you get prepaid cards in the UK in someone elses name? Essentially like a visa/mastercard gift card. I know you can get them elsewhere like in the states, but I've Googled around and I can't seem to find anything similar for here.

Yes, you can get them. Many of them are reloadable, and some support contactless. The recipient hands over their details when they activate the card.

Who's the target market for these? Are they just ersatz bank accounts for people who shouldn't be able to get bank accounts? How do the nice bank people explain this to the government?

Wasn't the government keen on everyone having access to at least a basic bank account, regardless of their standing? Do these count?

They're useful for situations where you might not trust the person using them, or the situation you're using them in.
For example some parents give them to teenage children for spending money, you can top it up with just however much you want them to have. They're good if you're travelling and are afraid of losing a card, there's less hassle than losing your main credit card. They're also useful for buying viagra from dodgy websites if you're into that sort of thing.

Some banks allow standing orders to count too instead of direct debits. If you've got a pension, chucking a few quid in there by DD would work.

I'd hope he's not still stuck on this almost 2 years later.
