It's not particularly obscure, but Roger Dean's artwork for the series is amazing.

There's a whole thread of Deans work here somewhere.
Actually, the movie Avatar reminded me of it somewhat.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. All I could think of was old Yes albums when watching that movie.

Alas, the days when games had to have attractive covers and decent storylines to make up for the shitty graphics.

What game is that in English?

夕闇通り探検隊

It roughly translates to 'The degree of dusk exploration' or something similar to that.

At that point in time you had to hire an illustrator to get yourself a decent cover and set the mood of the game, you couldn't simply put a montage of your own models the way they do now.

It certainly gives better results than a boring montage.

I can still remember Shadow of the Beast's artwork, but a generic game model of a buff guy with a gun gets forgotten quickly.

Exactly. Look at the Star Wars posters, they used to be lovely images painted by this guy whose name I forget; with the prequels they were forgettable photoshop montages of publicity shots.

It costs more money and takes more time to get a decent illustration done, but I think it's worth it.

Well, here's a video of the game - I guess that's a start, but I can't help you in finding an English language ROM.

I also forgot to add that its a horror exploration game, you walk around as a group of three Japanese kids, or something like that.

These might not have been that obscure for their time (though they probably are now) but someone mentioned star wars, these also have proper painted art, like the films.

Here's a synopsis in English. OP's game used to frequently get posted around 4chan, but I've not been there for ages now, so I'm not sure if it still does.

OP here, I actually have that game in my possession now (went to Japan last summer). Really fucks me off though because macs are shit at emulating PS1 games, so even though the disk is near perfect and I also have a rom of the game, it freezes. My girlfriend does have a mod-chipped ps1, but the controller ports are now refusing to work. I think god doesn't want me to play this game.

PS1s are satisfyingly modular inside and very easy to disassemble (you don't even need a special screwdriver, a regular phillips head will get you in). Chances are the ribbon cable on the controller ports has worked loose.

(Or suck up your pride and run bootcamp - if you're into games it won't be the last time you'll want to run something on it that doesn't exist for Mac, and I'm saying this from experience.)

Not exactly great art, but the cover appeals to me.

Loving the Roger Dean video game art.
