I wouldn't wanna be caught in a lift with the crazy old trout but after watching her very odd film 'Top Spot' I developed an appreciation for her crude and wildly over-emotional work. Thousands of better artists, but millions worse.

All "YBA"s are talentless, pretentious, pricks and are best ignored. Dimbleby makes it all better though.

Well they captured the spirit of that age, whereby you can go a long way on marketing, PR and spin. The YBAs (and their dealers) were skillful spin-doctors.

Shame on /art/ for philistinism.

Emin's work has been at least consistently competent and attractive (unlike Damien Hirst's wildly uneven oeuvre) and I'll take the shortcomings of the YBAs over the dumbed-down fakery and intellectual void of Banksy anyday.

My problem with her work is that she seeks to set art back over 100 years to the era of bohemian/romantic 'self-expression' - I'm sure she's not exactly unaware of the history of modernism and conceptual art's inextricable links to poilitical/social movements (think Dada, Fluxus, Viennese Actionists) but she chooses to ignore this completely in favour of a victim-centric viewpoint interchangeable with the 'my painful childhood' memoirs flogged at every supermarket. It's possible that she's entirely sincere in wanting to reach the average person and make art accessible to the untrained by doing this, I know she bangs on about compassion and wanting to help people a lot.

I don't have a problem with the fact that her only subject matter is herself - she's certainly not entirely solipsistic.

I prefer the more rigidly conceptual and arch work of the Chapman Brothers - maybe cos I am male.

Sage because there is much more to art than defending/slagging celebrities. As a celeb she is painfully annoying. So was Dali.

I find the work of the Chapman brothers far more accessible than Emin. Disregarding the actual reasoning behind the work, it's something I'll happily spend time looking at thanks to its oddness than a messy bed.

Emin is a kook and a crook. The trouble with the art world is that none of those luvvies are brave enough to say that the emperor is wearing no clothes, despite historical examples of famous artists taking the piss out of these "art lover" idiots with deliberate piece-of-shit art pieces that are bought up for silly pirces and displayed, much like unmade beds and fried food dumped on a table.

I'll enjoy watching all of it being squeezed out of existance as money becomes tighter and tighter. Fuel for the furnace is about all most of this will be good for and is their likely fate.

There are no great artists. None that will be remembered in those cliques.

To think that in generations in the past there was such beauty in Paris's art that the retreating German soldiers risked their lives and refused orders to blow it up. I doubt they'd even have to think twice about torching the Tate Modern and all this other junk. Actually, they'd have probably burnt it all minutes after they invaded, if they had any sense and taste. I doubt there are any money junkie and attention whore mainstream artists that could create such wonders and I think that even outside these foul circles the numbers are dwindling by the minute. They are too busy leaving lipstick high tide marks on the cocks of the critics and gallery owners.

The last true artistic genius (and I really mean a humbling level of potentially Leonardo type genius that makes pretty much any other wannabe artists here and elsewhere a childish run-of-the-mill effort by comparison) I have seen the U.K. was (to my mind, unfairly) imprisoned a while ago. Probably completely ruined from the experience by now as they were almost childishly innnocent socially and not one I'd expect to fend off muggers and rapists. Shame. Probably cost the country and generations to come a great legacy of art. If it was up to me I'd have had him tucked away in a studio and fed whatever materials he wanted. Other than that sad example I've yet to see anything like it again. I doubt I will in my lifetime (as such things are rare gems compared to the common dross being discussed here that we almost fall over every day). Certainly not with the modern culture. The thrill of thuggish has a lot to be sorry for.

>Yeah, and there's no point conducting research unless you're Nikolai Tesla, no point thinking unless you're Nietzsche.

Sounds like your rear end is a little overly tender and sensitive as that wasn't in the post at all and must have been lingering in your own mind and sense of shame. Dry your eyes.

Seeing as you mentioned it then to be Devil's Advocate I say in return - pretty much, in many cases. Why listen to the third rate when first is there? Why display the wooden spoon level art when there are great world class works? Are we all meant to stand and admire your child's worthless and generic crayon scribblings because all art and all thinking is equal? Absolutely not. Sure there are jobs for those desitined to do nothing great as there are always tedious things that require no spark of greatness and are mere time wasting distractions for the best. Walls need painted, tedious tasks need to be done and measurements recorded, gossip magazines need covers and jingles for soap powder adverts need to be written. None of which require much talent or intelligence.

You sound like the kind of sad defensive hugbox addict who dearly clings on to the fantasy that participation is all that matters in the race, not winning and try their best to ban all sports in school so that everyone can be "winners" of nothing to try and enforce equality in success and accomplishments. How dare those people be smarter than you! How dare they succeed where you have failed! If only you could get a law written for it! It is that kind of bitterness that only forces someone even lower down on the podium of life.

Well this is very easy to argue against. I'm not the person you're replying to, but you sound silly enough for me to reply to anyway.

There is no way of ranking every living artist so that you can go along to the Top of The Pops gallery and see Artist #1, and then Artist #2, and so on. Anyone's appreciation of an artist's work is purely subjective.
In the case of Tracey Emin, I've got no love for the woman, I think she's dreadful and talentless, but my opinion doesn't matter. She wasn't put on a pedestal by winning a television phone poll, she wasn't called #1 Artist by The Crowned King Artist Of The World. She was made famous because a private gallery owner decided he wanted her work in his private gallery; and when you go to the Saatchi gallery you're not going to see the Scientifically Proven Objectively #1 Artist of the Known Universe, you're going to see the artists that Saatchi likes, and only the work that Saatchi likes.

It's one mans private and entirely subjective decision, if you don't like it perhaps you should write Mr Saatchi a letter and ask him why he gave that silly bint some money 15 years ago; or maybe you could open up your own gallery and show the work that you appreciate, and maybe people will agree with you and pay you money for the privilege; or perhaps you could just do like everyone else does and stay the hell away from the Saatchi gallery.

and frankly... not every other person in the world is going to stop because >>2700 thinks he knows some numpty that is better than them.

Key faults :

1) Why is Saatchi's opionon worth anything? Especially since this art is shit.
2) Why is it being covered in the media to the point of obscuring better art?

1) You're getting hung up on the 'subjective' part, Saatchi's opinions aren't worth anything more than anybody else's, the only difference is that he owns his own gallery.

2) Is it being covered in the media? It happened 15 years ago, and when it was being covered the vast majority of it was poking fun of her.

3) Why the sage? It makes it difficult to see your replies, anyone would have thought you're ashamed of your own opinions.

4) You sound like the kind of sad defensive hugbox addict who dearly clings on to the fantasy that participation is all that matters in the race, not winning and try their best to ban all sports in school so that everyone can be "winners" of nothing to try and enforce equality in success and accomplishments. m8, wtf? So you're saying she didn't try hard and just participated, but that's ok because some random twit with more cash than sense thinks she's good. And then saying that I believe that?

My head hurts.

>>2) Is it being covered in the media? It happened 15 years ago, and when it was being covered the vast majority of it was poking fun of her.

In art museums, similar shit is being posted instead of decent stuff. It's always stuff more similar to Emin or hurst's shitty work, instead of the work of Dali, Escher, Da Vinci or Van Gogh. That's why I don't like these twits.

In conclusion : lolno, I'm not a hugbox addict. But you seem to sound like one.

Most of the 'good' artist talk absolute bollocks when put to an interview or asked questions. This is the generation of lowest common denominator art. I you compare someone like hirst, what he says and what other people say about him there's a huge gap i understanding in everyone else's favour, he's a dick. At least Emin has the balls to spout of the pretentious art-talk, even if it is all obviously post-work thinking.. but they're all getting to old now, how long has he been painting those fucking butterflies, and Emin just started making touchy-feely blankets -probably compensating for her lack of gran'kids.

Saatchi seems to be in a state of perpetual mid-life crisis, and the secondary market can suck my balls. lalalala la ala
