2515 Glitch Art
Has anyone else here tried to create their own glitch art using text editing software?

Here's something I made earlier.

Nice work OP
Please could you go into more detail as to how you created this piece please?

Ok, you need to first find the image you want to glitch, then copy it and paste it into an easily accessible area (I recommend making a folder on your desktop), then change the extension of the image to .bmp and open it in notepad (or textedit on mac), then scroll down most of the page until you reach a bunch of random characters, feel free to hack and slash at it, enter and delete whatever you want - experiment. Save it and open ever so often to see how its going.

Have fun.

I'm very much enjoying this. The same thing can be done with aiff or wav files to make some lovely glitchy sounds for anyone interested.

I've been able to also glitch NES ROMs with a Hex editer, for example I've made a glitched ROM of The Legend of Zelda (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TZBT2OMR)

Start a new game and when you start walking about, press start. Don't enter any of the caves as it will cause the game to crash.

I've tried it, all that happens for me is that no program can open the file.

Just notepad to edit it, I tried opening it up with every programme I could think of, but nothing worked.

Make sure the extension is .bmp and open it with notepad edit it and save it, don't use save as. I'm using textedit, so there might be some difference.

Also, you've probably completely corrupted the file, save after every change so that you can revert to its original state if it becomes completely corrupted.

>change the extension of the image to .bmp
Changing the extension by renaming the file is absolutely pointless; it doesn't change the data within and Notepad/Wordpad will open anything. I can however see the value in converting the file to bitmap format.

I've heard .jpg is more volatile and likely to become completely corrupted, but whatever works I guess.

Yes, that does make sense. You've missed the point however that simply renaming a file (changing its extension) does not convert the file itself. For that you have to use a program that offers such functionality; Windows Explorer does not.

Worth a look if you know a little about programming, or even if you don't.

I must be a retard. I'm doing exactly what the op says, but every time I try to open the image, it says it's unable to parse the jpeg data (unsurprisingly) or an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found.
(Screencap related for halp pls. There's that chunk of text for the first quarter, then that gap, then the rest of the file is the same below the gap which I try and edit. What do.)

No seriously, I must be a retard. I've tried with 2 different photos, each time only editing a tiny bit in different places. It just refuses to re-open once I've fiddled with it and tried to re-open in photoshop.

It's incredibly fussy tbh, it's taken me hours to get a system that works for me, and it appears that it doesn't work for everyone. I'd mess around with different file types and editors until hopefully you'll be able to find something that works.
