Nah.

This is just the kind of predictable tripe you get from people who have appropriated and twisted a meagre understanding of leftist ideology into a personal excuse for being a useless wanker and not trying to improve.

It's more classist and ableist to lower your standards and not bother helping working class and/or thick people to learn and improve, because you think they are literally and innately incapable of doing so. (You see them do similar things with race too, joining the ends of the horse-shoe into full circle eugenicist beleifs; but let's not go into that.)

Are you sure this image wasn't just created for the purpose of fucking with people?

Generally there's no reason it needs to be classist and ableist, but I'd have thought most people should be able to tell from context when it's a nasty thing to do to correct someone's grammar.

>>444386

This lad gets it. It's a standard we like because it makes posts legible and pleasant to read for our niche of shed-dwelling robot fuckers. I probably wouldn't correct anyone on their grammar or spelling unless I really couldn't tell what they were saying.

It's real. There seems to be a vast increase in the usage of the word "neurodiversity" recently in relation to all sorts.

I feel like it's pretty obvious when the poor spelling or grammar is the result of neurodivergence, and we don't make fun of that (you'd get banned for correcting the grammar on someone's /emo/ crisis post for sure), and not to start yet another class definition argument but I think the circumstances of finding and being drawn to post on a board like this are mostly only going to apply to (at least socially) middle class people anyway.

I've always tried to be very forgiving of people with poor spelling in the past, but now absolutely everything has a spellchecker built in so it's much harder to excuse.

Grammar is still difficult for some people regardless, but there's people who write colloquially, and then there's times when I read comments on local news stories where the grammar is so poor I can't even understand what the person is trying to say.

My gf is dyslexic, and she'll ask me how to spell a pretty simple word and then get arsey if I don't leave a three second gap between each letter. I don't know if I'm privileged because I've always been good at reading, but a lot of the words she asks about are spelled as they sound.

The middle class aren't all reclusive shut-ins so your theory collapses. Most of us are just here because we spent too much time on the internet in the 00s which fucked us up but also as a by-product instilled passable typing and reading skills.

Internet communities used to be so unforgiving on poor spelling and grammar for the same reason letters are formal; it would to take time to get responses and anyone that didn't respect that formality could be dismissed as noobs. Even the process of accessing the internet was time-consuming as switching on your computer would involve making a brew while it booted up, there was simply no excuse not to take your time editing. Just as there is still no excuse on here - much as purple has tried to casualise the site by removing the delete function.

People these day though, they all post on their mobile phones to that Twitter and Instagram with instant gratification. You see it on otherplace as well where increasingly people don't capitalise 'I' and even 10 years back they would type 'TFW' which immediately marked a linguistic divide between it and other chans.

That only came about because of the mods on /sp/ blocking >my face when [an American was fat near me], which led to >I AM A DRIBBLING COCK to get around it.

I don't think so. This website is elitist and given the state of every other imageboard I think that's fine. The site's not even particularly robust in its elitism either, if it were I would have been perma-banned back when Nick Clegg was just a humble apologist for Tory selfishness, as opposed to the Devil's gimp himself.

On the other hand there are the ones from people who blew their brains on MDMA in 1990 screaming into the void about how they "just want to go back!". It's horrible.

I quite like the influx of lower tier threads contributed lately. Something for us instant-gratification lot who fell through the cracks of education. Sillier threads are definitely nice to have around. Massive debates are nice when you get in on the ground floor, but after three days of people hurling PhD theses at one another you can't really hope to catch up, let alone join in, if for some insane reason you wanted to.

I'm bringing back the good times. I was looking for something in the archive and what I found was that we were having regular weekend threads back in the likes of 2011, the difference was that we were still having loads of other threads at the same time.

Fuck it, lads. This is the future. Start your own threads when you can rather than lumping it into the generals.

On the one hand, I hold spelling and grammar dear to my heart. On the other hand, I know how arbitrary it all is and how flawed written English is. We should just spell everything phonetically. Properly, we should use grammar to describe how real language is used, not to dictate the proper way to use it.

It is classist, since command of language and literacy has always been used as a tool of class rule. And it is ableist, since some people can't maintain as high a standard of literacy as others thanks to some condition, which is a problem since money and power can be acquired more to those who command a better ability with 'proper' English.

OP's image is typical of a doomed approach towards bringing positive change by being technically correct but irritating people by not explaining anything. Explanation is the important thing, otherwise it's all just pointless the shipping forecast.

Most of the responses to the image were from spackers saying they prefer it when people correct their spelling and grammar because they'd rather learn and stop making those mistakes in the future.

>It is classist, since command of language and literacy has always been used as a tool of class rule.

I would say it has been more a tool of class distinction. Whether you like it or not, proper spelling or lack thereof almost unmistakably signifies you as a member of a particular social class. It is rare that somebody from the upper middle class or upper class makes the same kind of spelling mistakes and with similar frequency as somebody who grew up on the rough side of North London.

> And it is ableist, since some people can't maintain as high a standard of literacy as others thanks to some condition

While I don't think your wrong, I believe that seven times out of ten, people are just plain lazy and/or never tried hard to master proper spelling. Expecting somebody who is capable to make an effort isn't necessarily the same as mocking somebody for their innate inability.
