This week I have been mostly eating listening to Promoe.
He is rate good and his hair makes him look funny. He sings songs about trains.
https://www.youtube.com/v/YLAcO3r5Xjs

but not about riding them I think he likes to run instead.
https://www.youtube.com/v/er1oj0tZiHQ

This song is about toothpaste. Isn't he silly!?
https://www.youtube.com/v/Nvo2bpWP-1k

I think this song is about Myspace and he says L O L so I can relate.
https://www.youtube.com/v/aZ13soezo1E

This song has three choruses!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA8llQeJ19w
The last thirty seconds of this song are a funny!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9X1-nlGe-w

I like this one because he looks like a silly man with a beard when he is wearing a dress.
https://www.youtube.com/v/vfucjzC8BOk
It is very strange because he is rate good but no-one has heard of him or his friends in this country. I think it is because they are a new band and they only have a few good songs, also their english is not good. If they practiced then even Mr Cameron would like them!

I have a copy of the police-raided LA24 although it's nowhere near as dramatic on the tape as the one you can hear at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sJ-evP4diM from two gigs before.

I was too young for that era but have insane memories of LA 84, Leeds 2001. Half the audience fleeing in terror early through the gig when a completely out-of-control Sotos launched into the crowd straightaway spurting blood from a self-inflicted cut, spitting in people's faces and pushing people off seats - this not long after the stories about him being HIV+ had started. The few of us left behind throwing bottles and glasses at the wall behind the band's heads while Philip Best could barely control his mirth at this wildness. Band members driven to hospital immediately after the gig by promoter.

If you pre-ordered it from Play the booklet was signed (i.e. 'King Charles' was scribbled on the front in marker). There's a couple of people on there who bought a signed copy for £8 and are now trying to sell it for £20.

Bam Bam is one of my least favourite tracks on the album; Ivory Road and Polar Bear are the best, in my opinion.

I am always grudging in my admiration of the Wedding Present. They did some great tunes but could be gratingly over-down-to-earth if that makes any sense. I remember being introduced to Gedge in the bar at a Stone Roses gig at Leeds Poly spring '89 just before the Stone Roses got huge. Seemed like a nice bloke. God I'm an old cunt. The very last few chords are Pachelbel's Canon in D. I'm guessing it's just a stock piano'd version of it. Look round on YouTube, there are loads of versions and you might find it. If you want artists that are similar to that, try Ólafur Arnalds and the tumbled sea.

It sounds like 13 minutes of an intro to a Dog Fashion Disco track. I keep expecting it to suddenly launch into a monologue about femme fatales over some jaunty polka.

This knocked the wind out of me. I can't believe what has happened to Jimmy Somerville's voice over the years - he has kept all of the fragile and ethereal quality of that countertenor, but has gained an incredible assurance and control. The little wisps of vocal fry, the precision of his vibrato, it's just astonishing.

While I'm on a queer note, one of my favourite gay songs, made all the more remarkable by having been written by a straight man (the wonderful Charles Aznavour):

I present to you "The Musicians of Grope Lane", a recording of bawdy ballads from the mid 17th century, mainly taken from the Pepys archive.

http://www.allmusic.com/album/release/the-mufitians-of-grope-lane-mr0003979317

My personal favourite is "The Maid's Complaint", which contains the following delightful verse:

"At night when I do go to bed
thinking for to take my rest,
Strange fancies comes in my head
I pray for that which I love best:
For it is a comfort and pleasure doth bring
to women that hath such a pritty fine thing,
Call'd a dill doul, dill doul dill doul doul,"

Sorry about the caps, but where I'm pasting this from is like that. here are the lyrics.

I SMOKE LOTS OF CRACK AND MY GIRLFRIEND HAS A KID
I LIKE DRUGS AND CHILD ABUSE
WHEN SHE'S IN THE BATHROOM, I KICK HIM IN THE BALLS
I LIKE DRUGS AND CHILD ABUSE
WHEN SHE'S AT WORK, I TEACH HIM HOW TO SHOOT UP
I LIKE DRUGS AND CHILD ABUSE
WHEN SHE BEATS HIM UP, I SIT THERE AND LAUGH
I LIKE DRUGS AND CHILD ABUSE

WHEN HE WAS IN 3RD GRADE, HIS BEST FRIEND O.D'D
BECAUSE I MADE HIM SELL HEROIN AND SPEED
I LIKE BEATING KIDS FOR NO REASON AT ALL
I LIKE DOING DRUGS AND BEATING UP KIDS

I think the closest we've come to street artists of any kind getting recognised for their contributions is Benjamin Zephaniah. I can't find the video I wanted to link here as I think someone's taken it off YouTube, so have him being funny instead:

100% serious, I've been listening to Hey QT so often that it's starting to send me psychotic. PC Music are the maddest, hardest, most dangerous record label on the planet right now. I know people who will happily pay money to see Merzbow, but can't sit through three minutes of Hannah Diamond. I don't know if I love it or hate it, but I certainly fear it. PC Music isn't the label we want, but it's the label we need.

I'd shit my pants if I was in that chair, no shade of a lie. Also, I feel incredibly proud that I got all the graf questions right when even Semtek didn't. Not that it's really fair to put questions about graf in a hip hop music quiz, but I digress. I still got them all. Fancy not knowing who TAKI 183 is. Tsk, Semtek, tsk.

The problem as I see it is that jazz is a highly self-referential art form that speaks a language of its own. Jazz players use many techniques and theoretical approaches that are rare in other kinds of music, which can be immediately alienating. Improvised performances are part of an ongoing dialogue amongst musicians, and can be difficult to make sense of without a broader understanding of jazz in context. Listening to jazz as an outsider can be a bit like watching a foreign film with the subtitles off; You can catch the gist of things, but the language barrier stops you from picking up on the details.

I think that this video gives a taste of the joy of jazz, and how a truly great player can express themselves:

https://www.youtube.com/v/ec-FrnaU0rs

Peterson demonstrates the effortless mastery that jazz players strive for - the ability to simply pluck music out of thin air, fully formed and perfectly realised. A great part of the wonder of jazz is watching someone create music spontaneously and freely; The great improvisers seem to play as naturally as breathing.

Much of the jazz tradition is built upon "the standards", a pool of songs that are the basis of a shared vocabulary. Because standards are widely known and understood by jazz musicians and listeners, they represent an infinitely malleable raw material that can be used by a performer to communicate their particular way of hearing. In a sense, standards are to jazz what bowls of fruit and nude women are to painting. In my opinion, understanding standards-based improvisation is the key to unlocking the beauty of jazz.

"Summertime" by George Gershwin is one of the most popular standards, in part because the simplicity of the tune gives great scope for improvisation and personal interpretation. We can compare a few different performances of this tune to get a window into how jazz musicians think.

In case you're not familiar with the piece, we'll start with a straight performance, exactly as Gershwin wrote it in 1935:

https://www.youtube.com/v/O7-Qa92Rzbk

Hopefully you might hear some of the influences that shape the composition from early African American music - gospel, spirituals and work songs.

Next, a performance by Billie Holiday, recorded a year later in the hot jazz style of the day:

https://www.youtube.com/v/uYUqbnk7tCY

This interpretation is fairly faithful to the original, but is grittier, harder edged, with a more louche feel. The rhythm is more prominent and more strongly swung.

Skipping forward into the bebop era, we start seeing freer and more interpretive performances by small ensembles, with a stronger emphasis on improvisation.

https://www.youtube.com/v/0wgUsRMQ6FU

This performance is in the classic bebop style, beginning with a 'head' section in which the structure of the song is stated, then a series of solos in which each player takes turns in leading the improvisation. The tune is an idea, the solos meditations upon that idea, with the chords of the original song providing a framework for the improvised melody. In this performance the head section is highly abstracted, but still recognisable due to the iconic status of the tune. I particularly enjoy the interplay between the two saxophonists, passing the lead back and forth like tennis players.

Moving into the post-bop era, we see improvisation come to the forefront, with the original song being just an inspiration for an original performance.

https://www.youtube.com/v/JzG3G4C8jMY

In this trio performance by Duke Ellington, the tune is deconstructed, divorced from its original harmonic structure and a long way from a simple pentatonic lullaby. The piece becomes a disjointed display of anger, confusion and disaffection. In parts, Ellington punches out the melody, as if each note is being spat through gritted teeth; This contrasts strongly with his usual elegant and flowing style, which can occasionally be glimpsed in this performance. The sparse percussion evokes a sense of strident afrocentrism.

Finally, my personal favourite interpretation, by Albert Ayler:

https://www.youtube.com/v/4Id6N30MuII

This performance is deeply personal, the guttural howl of a man at the brink of total mental and spiritual disintegration. Ayler uses his mastery of the saxophone to push the instrument to (and sometimes beyond) the limits of musicality, evoking the drunken roar of a desolate man wandering alone. Inspiring controversy even amongst jazz musicians, Ayler was part of the avant-garde who began to abandon melody altogether in favour of pure expressive sound.

Jazz is a demanding musical form to engage with, but it is a rich and endlessly rewarding genre to explore. It can be pleasant background music, a brutal wall of atonal noise, or anything in between. Jazz offers all of the sophistication and complexity of classical music, but with an unparalleled degree of spontaneous creativity and personal expression. There's always something new to learn; Familiar recordings slowly reveal their secrets as you become a more savvy listener.

To give another point of comparison and reflection, two wonderful versions of "Yesterdays" by Jerome Kern:

Is it just me, or is this song used as background music in every. single. fucking. documentary about 1970s Britain?

Just the other day I saw a documentary on BBC Four about unemployment and unrest during the 1970s. And it had several scenes in it where run-down streets in the poor part of town were underscored by the intro of "Another Brick".

Don't get me wrong, I think this was Pink Floyd's best song of their entire career (unsurpassed even by epics like High Hopes or Shine On You Crazy Diamond). I just think it has become sort of an overused cliché.

TV producers (even some very good ones) tend to be lazy about music, because they're primarily visual people. They naturally delegate sound recording and mixing to professionals, but rarely involve anyone competent in choosing sync music. Because it's treated as an afterthought, they just reflexively go for the easy choices - Another Brick in the Wall for Thatcherism, Two Tribes for the cold war, something by Burial for urban decay, Money by Floyd/The Flying Lizards/The O'Jays for anything involving spending.

I'm particularly aggrieved at the number of programme makers using the royalty-free music that comes with Final Cut. I can understand a YouTube channel doing it to avoid the fuss of licensing, I can understand a zero-budget production doing it to save a few quid, but what really annoys me is when BBC productions do it - the Beeb have a blanket license agreement for music, so it doesn't cost a production company anything to use any choice of music. Every time I hear those pieces, I hear a producer saying to himself "fuck it, the plebs won't notice".

Not strictly true. It doesn't cost a production company anything to use any choice of music as long as they resign themselves to only being broadcast on the BBC in the UK. If they want to be broadcast in other territories, resell to other outlets in the UK, or release the programme on DVD/BD/VOD/DTO/BBQ/P2P/BSH/whatever, then they'll need separate clearance and a separate licence. IIRC, the BBC will only let you use their agreements if they're directly funding at least some proportion of the production budget (25%?).

Plenty of productions do the sensible thing, which is to either find suitable library music in the first place, or use music from the blanket agreement on the BBC release and re-dub library music in place of anything they can't clear for a secondary release. Too many producers can't be arsed thinking about the music and pick whatever is convenient, which just wouldn't be acceptable in any other aspect of production.

Either way, it's tidy money into the pockets of David Gilmour and his lot everytime the bass riff of "Another Brick in the Wall" appears on telly to underscore yet another flashback to the late 1970s.

As a TV production company, you have to ask for clearance; everytime you use music that is copyrighted, you have to ask the rights owners if they are ok with you using it. This can add up to a nice supplementary income if you happen to own the rights to a popular piece of music that is used often.

I always knew I wasted my youth... I should have written one big belter and then be set up for life. I did write some music as a teenlad, even briefly had a band with my mates, but it went nowhere and we disbanded without ever having played in front of a notable audience. We called ourselves "No Morning Glory" (a play on Oasis's album "What's the Story, Morning Glory"), and we played some sort of poorly conceived post-Britpop/early 2000s indie mishmash. But as I said... it never went anywhere.

Maybe you can liken it a bit to the image of the 1980s as it still exists in many people's mind: an integral part of it is the pastel designer suits and Italian sports cars of Miami Vice, althougj to be fair, those tacky pastel suits were a passing fad circa 1984-1986 only... because after 1986, Miami Vice quite simply turned to shit. And yet' people nowadays are prepared to fully believe that everybody wore pastel suits and slippers with no socks for the best part of an entire decade...

I like where grime, hip hop, dubstep and bassline meet. I think it was just given the clunky name of "bass music" or UK bass. It might have gone out of fashion quite some time ago though (not that that has any bearing on me liking it). I liked that indie/dance crossover that was a thing in 2008 too. I wasn't a big fan of the 90s version and Madchester stuff although I like Cut Copy's impression of it.

The northern soul scene was driven by "discovering" tracks which had been out since the mid-sixties and sometimes a lot earlier. By that vice, you could definitely argue that northern soul isn't a genre of music, and a lot of people probably would. There's definitely a distinctive sound common to all "northern" tracks, mind, so by that vice you can probably argue it is a sort of genre. If you're familiar with northern soul dancing, the sound people would look for is basically a "beatin' rhythm" that would make people want to dance like that.

https://www.youtube.com/v/LSv9LOMDhbU

https://www.youtube.com/v/HTM3bBqD8GA

These are a pair of entry-level Wigan Casion tracks that I'd say are pretty good examples of the sound of the scene. I say entry-level not because I'm a snobbish cunt, per se (though I am), but because there's an enormous amount of snobbish cuntery in soul music in general. I know people who would sneer at hearing these tracks and disregard them as being "Wigan tracks just to please the baggy brigade". There's a sort of splinter genre that's been around decades (by definition), but really taking off in the past few years or so which people refer to explicitly as "R&B", by which they mean yet another distinctive sound common in tracks from the late fifties and early to mid-sixties. I've actually been to an R&B club in Lincoln where they have a policy against playing records made any later than 1966. The scene is mostly dominated by hardened veterans who grabbed these records years ago when they cost less and scowl at people dancing around in baggy trousers, but there's also a fairly large contingent of well-off London 20-somethings spending the money their parents gave them on these mega-bucks records.

https://www.youtube.com/v/igHm6R7aYPI

This one isn't even particularly rare, but it's a solid example of "R&B". When I first heard a DJ play this, I asked him what it was called so I could write it down and add it to my little list of wants, and he offered to sell me the 7" single for £2,000 there and then.

Insightful to a kid too young to 'be there', thanks. Brewster and Broughton's chapter on NS (their book in general) was a great read but nothing seemed to define the sound other than old/undiscovered records from the US that the 'kids could dance to' but usually from black souls artists who had already given up on their career in music which is what ultimately killed the NS scene. It was the date/age reference that had me pondering as to your disclassification. I'd take the ecstatic hammering on a hammond organ backed by a furious drummer and some wild bass slapping over NS anyday

A lot of the best soul tracks come from artists that never had more than that one track, released on some record label that was only around for a year or two and never really broke out of its nowheresville USA hometown. I'm not sure I agree with the lack of new tracks from beloved artists being the demise of northern soul, though, as I'd probably attribute it to people being more than happy to listen to the same tracks week in week out instead of digging further, which is pretty boring.

https://www.youtube.com/v/zWlPIAxDAA0

Someone recently found a copy of this track somewhere on its original record label, London, prior to EMI buying the rights to it and destroying all of the copies on London. The record had been presumably played twice - once in quality control and then once again last year for the finder to confirm it was in fact what it said on the label. I think it went for in excess of £11k in the end. It is what it is to some people.

I think their reason was that because a lot of these records were 'dug out' from somewhere and that by looking backwards for records of a certain sound from another country of times that had passed ultimately lead to people running out of crates to find it worth their while to export and dig into, meanwhile that rythmic 'northern soul' beat had probably evolved into early disco. They referenced someone trying to 'find/sign' new bands with a NS sound but what came out sounded manufactured and didn't catch on iirc. However I may have remembered the book incorrectly as I have a habit of this. I once argued with someone I respected very highly that DMT came from baniseriopsis caapi (or how ever) and that harmaline came from psyciotra viridis. I had ready many books on the subject but just remembered the alkoloids the wrong way round. I'm dumb like that and now I'm rambling ☻

Erasure were kind of a late arrival to the British synthpop scene of the 80s, as they released their first major hit singles around 1985. But then again, Vince Clarke himself was already a synthpop veteran by that time, having been a founding member of Depeche Mode in 1981 and having had subsequent success with Yazoo, together with Alison Moyet.

It was said back then that Vince Clarke was taken with Andy Bell as a singer because Andy Bell sounded somewhat like Alison Moyet, which gave Vince Clarke the opportunity to release a few more tracks that were originally written to be sung by Alison Moyet during the days of Yazoo.

I'm never quite sure if this unlistenable dirge saved my life, or ruined it. I wonder what the teenage me would make of the boring old petit-bourgeois bastard I've become. Who am I kidding, he'd flob a big greener on my corduroy blazer. I'd deserve it.

The Beastie Boys paved the way for middle-class white boys in rap/hip hop music.

It may not seem out of the ordinary these days, but back then, white rappers were pretty much unheard of before the Beastie Boys appeared on the scene.

But then again, the Beastie Boys were not the first ones to come up with the idea, nor were they first to make hip hop/crossover music. The beginning of this was perhaps marked by the re-recording of "Walk This Way" by Aerosmith with Run DMC in 1987. And the music video to this collaboration is beautifully symbolic in this way.

And that, children, concludes today's music history lesson.

The Assembly - Never Never

One of Vince Clarke's less-known 1980s side projects.

There can just be something quite endearing about the sound of 8-bit synths, from today's point of view. Sadly, I think Feargal Sharkey's voice simply doesn't work with this song. I don't know... Feargal Sharkey sounded alright when he did "A Good Heart" under his own name two years later, but here, it just doesn't fit. Vince Clarke should have brought the song out with Alison Moyet during the days of Yazoo. That would have been brilliant.

Johnny Hates Jazz - Shattered Dreams

This was called "sophisti-pop" in the 1980s, and it was generally a polished, flawless, harmonious, smooth kind of synth pop sound with occasional brass sections and violins, and the bands who played this kind of music were typically well-groomed and wore silk suits. Bands like Level 42, ABC and to a lesser extent Simply Red were part of this movement. In some ways, it was the soundtrack of the mid to late-80s Yuppie generation.

Communards - For A Friend

This song reminds me of when my brother died; he died a horrible cancer related death. I wasn't in the hospital the day he died, and that still haunts me.

The lyrics may chiefly be about the mourning of a gay man over his lover's passing, but to me, the chorus "As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away, all I want to do is kiss you once good-bye" perfectly captures the moment that late afternoon when I got the phone call, and all I could do for the rest of the day was just blankly stare out the window and gaze into the sunset.

I don't remember the term 'sophisti-pop' but having lived through this garbage, add Swing Out Sister and Matt Bianco to the list. Also to an extent the AOR era of Genesis and Dire Straits - amazing how popular that stuff was with people my age I didn't hang round with, eg the future Prime Minister. Luckily the underground music of the era was wonderful.

I would still see them as distinct from what was, or wasn't called "sophisti-pop". They were never the kind of pleasant, polished, forgettable wannabe-posh Yuppie pop that ABC, Johnny Hates Jazz and indeed bands like Matt Bianco and Swing Out Sister purveyed.

I would've liked it more without the wubwub as well, but the rest of the track makes up for it for me. It has enough chilled out hiphop beat vibes with enough uplifting energy and that hint of "dark" beats. At work I normally listen to the di.fm psytrance channel but happened to dip into the drumstep stream when this was playing and it caught my attention enough that I had to look it up and caused me to delve deeper into glitch hop. For the door that opened alone I like the track.

I know it's not strictly on topic, but I saw someone posting quite eloquently about the subject earlier in the thread.

Anyway, just what is "northern soul"? Isn't it just Northerners listening to soul music? If that's the case why does that warrant a new genre? If I as a Northerner listen to enough '90's era gangster rap does that then become "northern gangster rap"?

Northern soul was a very distinctive sound, because they sought out rare records by lesser-known artists. A soul fan from London or Detroit wouldn't recognise most of the tracks being played in the Twisted Wheel or the Wigan Casino. The most iconic Northern soul record (Do I Love You by Frank Wilson) was never released, and no more than five copies of the original demo recording exist.

A somewhat similar example might be lovers rock, a style of reggae that became popular in London in the 1970s. At a time when reggae in Jamaica was moving towards a heavier dub sound with political and Rastafarian themes, British listeners preferred older rocksteady records that were more melodic and soulful. Lovers rock is identifiable as a genre, even if most lovers rock records weren't conceived as such.

You are now thinking about the first girl you ever fingered. Now you're wondering whether that nostalgic semi makes you some kind of retro-nonce. You are conscious of your breathing. Now you're painfully aware of your own mortality and the inexorable march of time. What happened to all those years? What happened to that bright-eyed boy with the world at his feet? All those scruffy kids, they've got kids of their own now. Do you remember when Freddos were 10p, when summer seemed to last forever, when the best thing you could possibly imagine was two litres of cider and an empty house? The sixth-formers seemed so mature then, but now you see them outside the school gates and they're just kids, daft kids with daft haircuts and daft hopes. Do we ever really grow up, or do we just get cynical?

You're not alone.

I've always preferred the intimacy and humanity of chamber music. In comparison to symphonic works, chamber music is rather punk - because chamber music can be written and orchestrated more quickly and performed more cheaply, composers are emboldened to take risks that they otherwise wouldn't. There's a conversational quality to a chamber performance, that starkly contrasts with the almost crypto-fascist nature of an orchestra.

Beethoven's late quartets were by far his most daring works, and still sound utterly modern. It's unsurprising that a lot of people struggle with those works.

The intimacy and argument is what I have grown to like and prefer in classical music over loud banging, though surprisingly there are a lot of transparently written sections in Bruckner's symphonies that are gorgeous if you listen to the exposition and development.

Aside from the whistling, it's fairly typical of early big band music. I'm reasonably confident that the artist is Fred Lowery, although I'm struggling to find the specific recording; Lowery recorded a number of 78s in the 30s and 40s that are very difficult to source. One of his albums is available on Spotify, entitled "Walking Along Kicking The Leaves".

Since they play it all the time in the shitty minimum wage place I work at, I have began not to hate it so much. Is that possible? To start liking something after it is forced upon you for weeks and weeks?

I don't think I have properly listened to this in years but I feel like its always on in the background when I'm driving. It seems one of those rare songs where the journey seems to go quicker when its on if you know what I mean.

What I'm saying is NASA should be investing in obscure 90s classics as a means to achieve viable long term space travel.

If you're going to slag them off, get your references right. Loads of post-punk bands sounded like Fire Engines, it was a proper scene.
