Is 2000ad worth reading anymore? After seeing the Dredd trailer I had a pleasant moment of nostalgia for back in the day when I used to get it all the time and it was brilliant and weird, but like all things I suspect it may have gone to pot. Anyone on here read it? And what's the Megazine like?

That's quite a tasty Judge Anderson. I'd drokk her stomm cube, if yo- ahh forget it.

I flick through it now and then at Smiths (while ensuring all the fucking Marvel comics are dashed to the back where they belong, while 2000ad takes pride of place), there's usually a few good stories but mostly it's reprints or something too 'modern' for my tastes. I haven't really invested any time in it to make a proper judgement.
Gotta say though, they cheap out on the artwork a lot these days, shitty colour washes or bland backgrounds, computer aided (read cut and paste) characters, it just looks dull and shitty.
I think The Meg might be a better investment, generally better quality though still loads of filler.

Reading back over that, there's no way I can be impartial, I fucking loved 2000ad as a kid, disregard everything I said.
Buy a few issues and see if it tickles you.

Picked up a prog the other day and had a go, joy of joys it looks like they've sorted it out. No crappy artwork, no filler, decent stories (though the Dredd one wasn't my cup of tea) plenty of THRILL POWER and laughs. Much more in line with how I fondly remembered it, might even start buying it again regularly.

OP here, I picked up 1791 when I was in town, and I agree with you, it's proper good. The Dredd strip was nice, hopefully he's back to busting crime instead of constant MEGA EPIC STORYLINE 40 MILLION DEAD which annoyed the hell out of me, though the art wasn't to my liking, looks like they've got someone in who wants to work for marvel so there's tits and arse everywhere for no reason. 7/10, would buy again.

That does sound wonderful.
I haven't bought it yet though had a nose through, seems like the best starting point for someone seeing as all but one of the stories are just starting now.

Skoob Books just around the corner from Russell Square Station has a "Best of" Dredd collection that looks and smells brand new for about £7.00. In case anyone cares.

The general feedback seems to be that it's an enjoyable film, but not a "good" one, where good no doubt means terrible bollocks like 2001 and a film can't get a great rating unless it tries to be deep or edgy.

I'm quite relieved that I'm able to watch the Dredd film in 2d at my local multiplex, here's a list (albeit very short) of cinemas showing the 2D print if that kind of thing concerns you.

I'm gutted that there isn't a 2D screening anywhere near since I generally abhor 3D films.

Just got back from seeing the film, utterly brilliant and the slow-mo 3D scenes are really quite stunning to see, so I really wouldn't let that put you off seeing it at the cinema. I really can't find anything to fault in the film TBH, massively gory and hugely entertaining.

Ditto just got back, snuck in for free 'BACK OF THE NET', it's a pretty sweet film, though I did find myself forgetting it had anything to do with Judge Dredd. With it being set entirely in a block, you're pretty disconnected from the real star of the comics, the city itself, for them to fuck it up.
I think they've established a pretty good base to work from though, should they choose to turn it into a franchise.

The Law Master bike looked like a complete bag of dildos.

that
was
fucking
incredible

It was spot on, with the previously noted exception of the lawmaster. There was so much crammed in, chopper graffiti, there's a dead fatty with his belly wheel snuck in at the start, the humour was pitch black, the violence was so far beyond too far it was ripped directly out of 2000AD, the music was brilliant, the city was just right - though I loved the Stallone film city, this just feels plausible - it grounds the film and gives it so much more, it's like this is just around the corner

What a film. What a fucking film. If you have any sense, ladm8s, you'll go out and see this, not only because it's a cracker, but to try and guarantee a sequel. Fuck me, I can't even begin to imagine what the dark judges would look like in this vision of the big meg.

40/10, film of the decade.

Just to add, I did think there were quite a few cuts made, probably at the behest of the squeamish pussies at the BBFC, and hopefully they'll be back in the directors cut. In particular I feel I was robbed of a graphic shot of someone's arm being blown up and a better slow motion shot of someone hitting the floor face first after being thrown out of a high window.

Oh, and the slo-mo scenes were brilliant. I imagine that if you went into the film with a bit of chemical augmentation it would blow your mind.

Oh yes, with the 3D glasses all that gore was fab and as for chemical augmentation, the first thing I thought when they showed the effects of Slow-Mo (twinkley stars etc) was "Mmmm Acid"

It was fantastic. While it wasn't exactly as the comic and more "real life" stylized it more than made it in violence, humour and stunning visuals. The way it was shot was also great don't know quite how to describe but I love it.
As >>3478 said there was also loads of titbits scattered through out pic related I swear I saw him on a billboard early on.

I can't wait to get the film on blu-ray, if only because I missed so much of the film due to having a headache from the 3D glasses. I did see a few bits and pieces of stuff from the comics though with Chopper graffitti and I'm sure one of the mega blocks was called the Owen Krysler building.

The slow mo scenes were well done as well, because they made sense to the story, though I did realise that the drug is basically Cake from Brasseye, which just made me chuckel to myself.

Saw this a while ago and forgot to add my two cents. I'm not as keen as many people are. Dredd was great and so was Anderson, and the block. The city was not so great. It's too post apocalypse present day (perps driving a regular old van etc, not enough high rise). As a result Dredd seems more Mad-max frontier soldier than agent of a police state. However, I'm hoping this movie is set early on in the Dredd timelines and that the city will develop more before the next story.

My real issue is with Justice dept. Dredd gets a cry for help out and two lame judges turn up and knock on the door. The REAL Justice dept would have been round like a ton of bricks in no time and that block would have been taken down. Again, perhaps their grip on the city will develop over time and we'll get to see PSU monitoring the minutae of every citizen's life and a truly powerful police state crushing any challenge to it's supremacy mercilessly.

I heard a rumour that the next film will be based around the pro democracy movement, basically a re-hash of the story 'America'. That would require a Justice Dept much more in control than the one presented here.

>>3487 Forgot to add, if this is truly set early on and we are watching a young Dredd, him cogitating and then eventually passing Anderson for full eagle would not have happened. He would have already known what he was going to do, being the decisive, intractable robot that he was. He would have failed her, because she did break the rules (and then someone higher in Justice Dept would have stepped in to overrule him).

Also forgot to add that the absence of Psi Div could also point to a very early starting point for the story.

It's set very early on, before the comics even started, only like 20 years or so after the war. Dredd's in his 70's in the current comics and presumably in the film he's in his 30's or so.

But yeah, too much post-apocolyptic misery & not enough Mega-city madness & future-shock. That's one of the things the the Stallone version at least got right.

I think a sequel's out of the question though, it's completely bombed at the box office.
