A new /eco/ hero is born:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-10911128

Minor correction for the BBC article: he walked 6000m, not "just" 4000m

He seems decent enough, despite being a posho, and I'm sure ARE RAY would approve.

Nice of him to do it in an attempt to secure the future of the Amazon.

What's wrong with poshos?

In general, everything. In /eco/ specific terms, they are responsible for ecological destruction and more importantly Bear Grylls is one of them.

If you now ask what is wrong with Bear Grylls, you will hopefully get a lifetime ban from our Purple overlord.

I know the issues that /eco/ has with Bear Grylls. I've always rationalised that he is an entertainer, and the warning at the start means that he isn't a liar, and that's why I enjoy Born Survivor.

And also, I might add that the lower classes contribute more to the destruction of ecology than any 'posho' could.

Touchy concept. In total, the lower classes contribute more, but that's mostly because there simply are a lot more of them. Another factor to consider is degrees of separation: Mr Posho might by his food in recycled paper bags at a farmers market while Mrs Chav buys the plastic wrapped stuff in the local Asda, but who drives further to get there? Let's not even get into the environmental destruction the conscious (though market driven) decisions a posho makes which destroy the environment v.s. the simple implementation of orders most lower classes are faced with. Mr Posho won't because that means leaner times for him, Mr Chav has to because refusal mean not just leaner times but starvation. Mr Posho likely maintains a purely ornamental garden, if nothing else, which runs counter to /eco/ culture.

I appreciate the JSA et.al. now form a good "safety" net, so starvation is no longer an insurmountable issue for those not homeless. Still there is the difference between "make the choice" and "take what you're given or fuck off".

Most people in /eco/ have been proved to be very nice and thoroughly agreeable, I'm sure your prejudice isn't shared amongst everyone.

A lot of the warnings, editing and later voice overs were added after it was revealed he was a filthy lying toerag.

People here are nice, but Bear is still on my shit list.

I still bloody like the guy. Maybe that's because I don't need to learn survival skills from TV and abhor any who do.

Sage because I'm going against consensus here, but diversity is what makes this place great.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I don't like Bear Grylls, my wife does, but I'm going to divorce that bitch.

Do you know how many "IT" people hate the representations of hacking or programming in popular media? Or how actual musicians dislike how talent shows pretend that people just turned up and were amazing? Or any number of similar situations where people with a clue dislike the oversimplification of what it is they do? That's why many people dislike him.

It might not be realistic, but I'll still watch it. Whateer, your opinion, my opinion. We're all the same schitzo anyway so it balances out.

I don't hate him, I just think he is rubbish and his programme is worse.

I can understand why the homos and ladies get moist over him though, which probably comprises the majority of his fanbase.

Whatever Grylls might have done to the world of survival programmes, that lad paraglided over the Himalayas at 15 thousand feet. Just because his production team decided to keep him in hotels when filming his survival stuff doesn't mean he's not still a badarse. I prefer our lord and saviour Mears as a survival/wilderness expert every day of the week, but he's never going to paraglide over the Himalayas. I've never even seen him climb a tree.

Yes it does. He's a gimp and should never be mentioned in the same post as greater men, lest you taint their good name.

How many years have you spent lying to the world, how many have you spent building an image on top of sham after con after lie? How low will you sink to get another penny?

It can only be a matter of weeks before he's a rentboy. No scruples whatsoever. Like a chav.

Quite a few and very low. I'm sure that rich Mr Grylls is going to feel so bad when he's parachuting into the Arctic.
