1484 A 5000 calorie farm... in your flat.
Did anyone else see the article in the Times about the Farm Box? It's paywalled so I'll attempt to summarise it. Multidisciplinary dead simple food production in your living room. It basically uses human waste to power the hydroponic element as well as using algae and fish (I'm not certain on whether the algae, shrimp and fish are some biological mechanism or more food).

The only downside this is just an idea. I'll look around and see if I can find the plan diagram from the Times. If I can't, I'll post a photo or a scan of it tomorrow.

The fish poo in the water and that fertilises the plants. You feed the fish of course, but the idea is thats enough to fertilise the plants. This way its hydroponic, without the chemicals.

The article was explicit about human sewage being involved. Sorry if you're squeamish.

I've struggled to find the diagram, so expect it sometime later today (since it's about 1am)

I mayyyy have misread this, but there was definitely a line about 'getting the general public used to handling sewage' which is why it's still a bit far off in terms of getting made on a grand scale.

isn't human shit toxic, and piss high in amonia? I couldn't imagine either being pratical for farming, otherwise we would have been using them for that purpose for the last 6000 years, instead of digging pits to dump them in.

These things have been considered for a long time. It's not much different to the "closed systems" people have tried either or even the bottle ecosystems.

The problems with all these systems is that they require a lot more maintenance than people expect (as anyone with a decent fish tank set up will know) and are incredibly fragile as soon as you start to increase their complexity and have them open like this.

It'd be a novelty, but it wouldn't actually be worth the effort in the practical sense. If you love being elbow deep in human waste then go for it. I'd never give it room.

The larger a system is, the more robust, but these would tend towards self-destruction, like a neglected fish tank.

That wiki also disproves your claim. The reason we don't use is, as is mentioned, is because you get pathogens. Thats not inherent toxicity, but rather that nasty stuff which affects us grows in it.

Isn't human shit OK for composting (hence composting toilets)? All I remember is that you shouldn't piss in them, presumably because of the ammonia.

I think that urine is supposed to be fantastic, and especially useful when trying to compost paper. Peeing in a ground toilet... I believe that when pee and poo get together, the odour is supposed to be worse than the odours of each component part.

human urine is a good high-nitrogen fertiliser. Lots of people have used it for growing tomato (*ahem*) plants.

I'd imagine they'd have to be eaten at some point if they are living and successfully breeding in there.

Just a pity everyone in this country would likely go 'eew that uses poo disgusting' even though the tap water they'll happily drink is just filtered sewage.

I heavily implied that I wasn't speaking for myself when I pointed out how tap water drinkers are hypocritical in refusing using parts of sewage.
