Simple question. How long will a Primus power gas 2202 canister last?

I'll be using it twice a day, once to thermos tea water and once to cook a hot rice or noodle type meal. I will be at around 4000meters staying in one place for 7 weeks. How many will I need?

Yes. I'll be in retreat, not running around looking for animals etc.

It would be best if you could try it as a test run to gauge it yourself.

Mate, solid fuel is possibly more appropriate.. you're going to have to take a full rucksack of gas otherwise...

7 weeks? Pray tell us the who why where what how?

Solid fuel is a non-starter as I'll be staying in a national park area. I've worked out that taking 4 canisters will be enough for my needs.

I'll be meditating/doing retreat at a pilgrimage spot in the Himalayas that is of particular importance to tantric Buddhists.

I will post pics afterwards.

A hex burner like this http://www.surplusandadventure.com/shop/survival-emergency/british-army-1-man-hexi-cooker-310462.html would be plenty, a quarter of a block is plenty to heat enough water for a cuppa. They're very light I use them all the time and I've never even come close to scorching any grass or leaf litter of course its still best to put it on an old bathroom tile as a safety precaution though.

These are good. The only downside is the smell off them. They are used all over the world though and with good reason.

Remember that Hexamine tablets are poisonous in fumes and as tablets and the need to be kept from the air for storage purposes.

You can get ethanol pouches which work well and similarly to the tablets, aren't poisonous and are better for the environment, etc.

Worth considering.

Yes, and it is very easy to transfer the hexie to your food whilst preparing it. Also, they don't work very well when it is windy.

Get a spider.

Not ideal for OP, but firelighters work as a cheaper and easy to obtain alternative to hexamine tablets.

I can't recommend ethanol fuel enough. You can get it in little tins like custard or coffe tins. Very easy to light, good heat comes out of it, resistant to the wind and easy to put back out (simply pop the lid on if it is in the tin or otherwise smother it). You can use it as a firelighter if you have plenty of wood or coals or you can use it on its own. It is non toxic, smokeless and environmentally friendly. It's also very safe and hard to go wrong with it. You can also very easily fill the tins back up again when they empty.

One little tin (pocket sized almost) will burn for about two and a half hours, which is pretty good.

It's like an idiot proof and extra convenient version of paraffin stoves. They are handy for the car too, if you're of a mind.

Meant to say you can light the ethanol fuel or tins of it from those firesteel lighters too. Anytime I've used them the first spark does the job.

Yeah. These things (Trangia stoves) are the bomb. Lightweight, reliable, and nice to cook with. Love it.

Can be pretty hard to get hold of meths, mind. Mine seems to go through quite a lot, and it's also getting quite expensive. It was over a quid fifty for 500ml last time I got some, the fucking cheek of it.

I've just made my own meth burner out of a shoe polish tin and some tin can lids with different size holes in (to alter the size of the flame). It seems to burn merrily enough without wadding but all the similar contraptions on youtube seem to use wadding of some description. What value does wadding add? I've tried it with cat litter (apparently it's good because it holds the meth but is also heat resistant) but can't see any difference.

>>2041 The burner works fine without the wadding and I've been cooking with it so I won't bother.

However methylated spirits is absolutely disgusting. I know the whole point of it is to make ethanol disgusting and that they sell it like that to stop people drinking it, but isn't there anywhere where you can get pure ethanol?

You could ask where the tramps are getting their supply.

It's still good fuel, mind.

>>2051

Yes. If it wasn't for the licences thanks to the drink industry you could make your own, but you can buy it in small to large gallon containers quite easily if you search about, you'd be surprised.

You can make a lamp out of tuna fish canned in oil too. You can even eat the fish. Nothing goes to waste. Bit mental for a first choice though.
