I feel like getting into the countryside for a few days, but I don't drive. Do I have any practical options?

Sort of depends on where you live.

I can walk/bike to some pretty nice countryside in less than an hour, and I'm pretty sure I could get a bus to north Wales in a few more. But all that is because of either where I'm at, or my Rainman like knowledge of my local bus routes.

Hell, I just 'remembered' that I can see The Pennines from my room.

Trains, being patient with rural bus routes, and your feet.

I once got from Birmingham to Clent Hills by train and walking, that was a lovely day. You just have to make the most of what public transport is available and be prepared for walking, which is really the whole point of being in the countryside anyway.

Thanks for this. I live in South Wales, Swansea specifically. I've considered taking a bus North or further West and staying in a B&B for a night or two. Doesn't sound unreasonable and shouldn't be too expensive.

Gower peninsula lad.

I want to go on mysterious cycle journeys from abandoned or ruined castles and shit in Wales at some point. Pembrokeshire's another option

£20 for a week pass on the buses. Gower Explorer routes if they're still running. Alternatively the X25 up the valley or anything in south Carms. Some of the buses from Llanelli take in some real middle-of-fucking-nowhere territory.
