I'm fat and I need to lose maybe 4 stone. What's the easiest way of doing it?

Eat exactly the same as you do now but leave half the carbs behind at every meal. If you have chips, only eat half of them, if you have bread, only eat half of it etc. Don't just eat more to compensate, genuinely do exactly what you're doing now but leave half the carbs behind. Don't start to just put half the carbs on the plate, you're here to lose weight, not save money.

Do exactly the same exercise as you do now but go for a 30 minute walk after dinner. Change nothing about how you move throughout the day/week except the addition of a 30 minute walk after dinner.

I've decide to go hard-mode. I'm going to have 2 small meals a day and no snacks. If I get hungry I'll drink some water or black tea.

I want to lose about 4 stone by my birthday in July.

This is a silly idea and you won't be able to keep it up.

Thanks. You've just given me the motivation to do it. I'll start posting pics of my progress soon.

Here's first pic. I weigh 218 lb (15 stone 8 lb). I want to get down to 168 lb (12 stone) by July 15. I'll post an update every 2 weeks.

It's strange that i'm a little under your weight but my physique looks completely different. Without being too much of a bumder, you seem to have one of those nice fat bodies where the skin is consistant and holds everything in a nice shape. I used to be a good deal over 16 stone and now my belly just hangs.
Maybe i'll charge my camera and post a picture for compasison.

I've stuck to the diet for the past 3 days. It was quite easy. Whenever I get hungry I just have a drink of tea or water. I estimate I've been having 1000-1500 calories a day.

I've noticed that my belly fat has started feeling kind of watery. Is this a normal sign it's being burnt off?

Good. I'll weigh myself and take another pic on the 29th. I predict I would have lost about 6lb.

Watery? OK... is this what they call 'ketosis'?

I've been eating carbs so I don't think it's that. It looks like my body is going into fat burning mode and softening up my fat stores.

Ketosis is when your breath smells of pear drops/a bit like arse. You can get little urine testing strips that will actually tell you when you are in ketosis.

They won't. They don't work, at least not in the context of a keto diet. They are designed for diabetics to monitor their levels of acetoacetate, which is nothing to do with nutritional ketosis.

So is this not the same thing as ketosis?

Can you burn fat without being in ketosis? What's the difference?

Ketosis is your body using fat for all of its energy.

Fat burning is still using carbohydrates for energy as per usual, but you east fewer calories than you use so still convert some of your stored fat into energy.

The practical difference is that by replacing dietary carbs (sugars) with fat, you feel fuller quicker and thus dieting is easier. There's anecdotal evidence that in keto you lose weight faster, but that's not necessarily a good thing depending on how fast you're losing weight anyway.
