I'm not overly familiar with the Note 4, but that's Android trying to do a system recovery because it can't boot up the OS. Again, I'm not 100% sure about this device but in general you'd need to hook it up to a computer and be actively trying to push a rom image onto the phone in order for this to be successful.

Sorry I can't create a new thread because I'm having to use a bastard proxy. I literally just bought a new smartphone, an Android, charged it to full and powered it up. It's asking for a PIN. There is no PIN, this is the first thing that's come up. I've Googled around and apparently no one anywhere else in the world has ever had this issue. What do I do?

At a guess, you may have been sold a stolen phone.

It might be network locked.

>>26208 Its likely lad that you brought it from a second hand phone shop. Depending on the device you can download various tools to free it up. What device is it lad?

This is a PIN for a standard lock screen, yes?

Try defaults like 0000 and 1234. Don't have too many goes of course, or you'll set off the timer.

It's an Honor 9, bought brand new and dispatched by Amazon. Should be completely unlocked too.

Just tried to do a factory reset, tried all the PINs beforehand too. Got the message "Software install failed the update package does not exist. Please download the package again"

So can't you just ask Amazon for another one?

Looks like I'm going to have to. Managed to get a little further with the factory reset but it's asking for a gmail address that was synced with it beforehand. Clearly this isn't brand new. It's just a ballache to get a replacement because I'm leaving where I am right now, tomorrow morning.

>>26216 Amazon are fucking shits for doing that. It's happened to me before with "new" stuff. Phone customer service and let them know, there normally quite good.

Not Op, but I have my own question.

If I flash stock recovery over TWRP will I lose any data or apps?

If you flash anything over anything you'll lose anything you don't have backed up.

So I'll only lose custom recovery then? Not my data or apps, which I think are in user?

Not him but I think the term 'flashing' refers to formatting a flash drive, and you know what happens to the data when you format a drive, right?

The flash memory is partitioned into different areas.

>>26220
It depends on what you're flashing. IIRC flashing stock images tends to reformat & wipe everything, but going to custom firmware often preserves things. Depends on what the upgrade script written in the image does.

Stock recovery... I dunno, I'm less confident that would wipe everything. I think recovery is a separate 'partition', so it'd *probably* be okay...

If your TWRP is still functional, I'd use the backup functionality if I were you to take a complete copy of your flash memory before you start. Just get everything backed up before you start; better to be safe than sorry.

I think we all seem to be talking about different things.

>>26219 seems to be referring to flashing stock over custom ROM

>>26222 seems to be referring to dirty flash

I will of course do a nandroid back up before fucking around. Just to be clear I'm on rooted stock android, and I want to go back to stock.
