Let's have a quote of the day thread.

I will start with one from Tim Harford, regarding Wonga:

"When your critics borrow language that is normally reserved for sexual abusers of children, you have an image problem."
Expand all images.

That's not a particularly literary quote mate.

What board should it go in then? I scratched my head on this one. And I am happy for literary quotes to appear as people stumble across them.

News maybe? From the way you're talking about it it seems like you were keener on posting that quote than making a quote thread, so it's a bit weird that you'd put it in /lit/.

Nah, I'd have thrown it in either /£$€¥/ or /news/ if that had been the case.

I just thought it would be nice to see ones people have stumbled upon that are good enough for them to want to share.

That's not even the most interesting thing Tim Harford has said...

Yes, we still have this board for unrelated nonsense like this.

I was thinking that too - clearly Bollywood Steampunk is a few classes above the vanilla variety (which is mostly Fedora-wearing try-hards).

It's also a bit strange that steampunk, basically channeling Victorian era, forgets about the colonies. 'Authentic' steampunk Chinese or steampunk Aboriginal Australians could really add something new to now stale and unimaginative aesthetics.

The reason for that is that it is all about this absurd fashion for OTT faux "Britishness" with moustaches and top hats and "pip pip what ho", even if you're in the bloody bath tub. You don't get to dress up and act like a twat in that fashion if you choose to be one of the spear waving tribals or the crushingly poor peasants or working class types.

The worst sort are always those who get related tattoos. I always enjoy seeing the fashion change and those buffoons with the permanent inking for a temporary fashion trend start to regret it, despite the fact it was so damn obvious.

But it makes sense that the highest castes of the Indians could have their cogs and whirls.
Has anyone read The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi? It's not unrelated.

Yes, absolutely. Colonials, especially Chinese and Indians, I'd say, could easily fit into overall British steampunk scene. Just google Chinese steampunk, it's quite fascinating.

It didn't blow me away but it's very hard to find fault with it. The variations in cultural attitudes and motives of the characters is fantastic.
