Today britfa.gs has taught me that people saying vica versa aren't mispronouncing it. I also learned how to pronounce segue ("segway") here.

I was wondering about the idea of having one thread of how to pronounce words/names correctly. Maybe the type of words you wouldn't bother to look up because you don't know you're pronouncing them wrongly.

I think Hegel is "Hay-gull" and Baudrillard is "boo-dri-yar".

I always feel a little superior for pronouncing 'research' as 'reh-search' and not 'ree-search'.

>Hegel is "Hay-gull"
How else would you pronounce it?

Moët is "Moe-et". You pronounce the t. I used to wait tables at a fairly upmarket restaurant and it made me feel a little bit better about my shit job when twats would attempt to correct my pronunciation and I would kindly explain to them that it was Dutch, not French. Not that I was bitter or anything...

Moog (like the synthesizer) rhymes with vogue.

I remember someone saying whenever he discussed Hegel with his lecturer, he had the irresistible urge to pronounce it "heegel" even though he knew it was wrong.

Neumann microphones are pronounced "Noiman" but if you're not into audio tech, you probably don't need to know that.

A lot of these are obvious if you're remotely familiar with the languages they come from.

It's anomalies like Moët and segue that are interesting.

Here's an anomaly. Apparently reveille has been franglicised to "ri-va-lee" and people would look at you funny if you tried to pronounce it in French.

It's the awful G sound in dutch. If you're ever a foreigner in dutchland it's advisable to pronounce it like a good foreigner and never ever attempt to pronounce it like they do. They will laugh at you behind your back and to your face as well :'( .

John Green taught me that hyperbole isn't pronounced "hyper bowl".

Then again I've never heard anyone in the UK say it like he does. Maybe it's a septic thing.

I still pronounce it in my head "hyper bowl" whenever I read it even though I know it's not the correct.

Sage for utterly banal post.

Christ that post is barely coherent, sorry lads. It should probably read something like,

>I still pronounce it "hyper bowl" in my head whenever I read it even though I know it's incorrect.

Don't know what was going on there. I've been eating odd drugs, think it's buggering my brain bits.

Sage for probably should have just deleted the post.
