I'm looking on moving to LDN. What's a nice, cheap part of town with a lower-crime rate than normal where I can find a share-house with some uni students or something like that?

Roehampton or Kingston. They are both sort of boring though.

An indication of your budget would help greatly.

All the sources I can find suggest that it began as a "mobile phone abbreviation" for London, though it does follow a similar pattern of shortening key cities to three-letter codes: BHM for Birmingham and MAN for Manchester (these are train station codes). People just like shorthand and things that come in threes, I guess. Sage for boring etymology lesson.

It's the airport code. I started seeing it on t-shirts during that Nu Rave shite.

While I am aware I may come to regret this, we are looking for a 4th person Sotub of the River: Herne Hill, Streatham, Tooting...

If you'#re interested I'll drop you a throwaway email and we can chat further.

In London it's one or the other.
I recommend somewhere in Southwark though, cheapest in terms of proximity to the city centre.

If you go further south you can get nice and cheap, but the transport is shit. No problem if you're a motorcyclist, mind.

So are we all supposed to just ignore the correlations here, or perhaps firmly remind ourselves that correlation doesn't imply causation?

I'm also moving over from Belfast late next month, I've been spending the last few days looking at http://www.spareroom.co.uk/ on the recommendation from from fellow Paddys.

Brixton/Kennington. Not even taking the piss, so long as you don't act like a complete fucking idiot you'll be perfectly safe and live like Kings. Assuming you're not completely impoverished.
It's about half an hour from London unis by bus (get ready to join tha 68 massif). Pal of mine lives in Brixton in a 2-man flat paying £70 a week, commutes to KCL erryday.

The latter - immigrants tend to move to the poorer areas; I doubt they've made them worse, though.

This. They come with fewer resources at their disposal, and need to establish themselves on the cheap.

Uxbridge Fucking Road.

the KFC is halal and if you go too far you fall off the end of the earth, but it's cheap and relatively safe
