I have a job that is a year long contract that I regrettably have to drive to. I don't plan on staying in it for more than a year before I move to London where I won't need a car.

I start early next year and was just wondering if there was any way I could rent a car for year that wouldn't eat away at my 22k salary for driving 40-60 mins to work and back everyday.

Maybe I'm just dreaming, but most seem to be three year finance deals, I just want one for a year or so.

Perhaps sticking "short term car leasing" into Google will answer your question.

If you're really trying to save money, get yourself a scooter.

Seconding the ped.
Had one for driving to college and back for a couple years; ~300 50cc hairdryer - £5 a week in petrol. Probably a good thing it's not a permanent solution, the things are deathtraps. It died just outside the Wolds as I was about to join a roundabout.

I don't know what I'm talking about, I admit. Was wondering if there was a way to lease cars or whatever.

I was told not to buy an old one because it won't be reliable.

What do I even look for in a car? Sorry to be a nob but I know jackshit about cars other than how to drive up the road it took to complete my test before I went away to uni years ago.

This is a seppo myth pedaled by the car companies that own the USA. My parents had used cars throughout my childhood. The car they have now is used. Never had a breakdown.

Told by who?

You only need it for about 15,000 miles and if it starts groaning after a few months then either get it repaired or scrap it and get another cheap car.

If you're as inept as you're making yourself out to be, you have two options:-

1) Lease a car. This will be the more expensive option, but if it breaks and it's not your fault chances are you'll have it repaired/replaced for free. It'll be a new/nearly new model and if you like all the the fancy new features then you'll get them. However, if you fail to make payments or some other financial fuckery happens, you might end up with a bad credit score.

2) Get a trusted mechanic to look at any used car you are interested in and give it the green light. ONLY buy from a reputable local dealership. Any decent dealership will offer a 1-3 month warranty, so if it does go tits-up then you stand a chance of not losing cash. If you don't drive it into a tree, you can sell it when you're done with it, possibly even back to the place you bought it from.

This. Also, don't forget to carry out a HPI check and get insurance quotes before actually buying. It might be because I live near Dewsbury, but last time I went car shopping the amount of vehicles which were repaired write-offs was staggering. There was even some dealerships Asian ones selling write-offs which hadn't been declared road legal again.

on 22k you should be able to afford either:
a. the cheapest banger that you can find and run it into the ground
b. the cheapest new car lease deal you can find, they're literally giving away some cars at the moment, should be able to find something for less than £100 a month with no worries about MOT / warranty issues etc, it also looks good on your credit record.

Can anyone give me advce about leasing? Currently driving a piece of shit that's given me nowt but problems. It's currently sitting in a multi storey car park 40 miles from home with a ruptured coolant pipe. When the insurance runs out on this shitheap I intend to lease. Anyone have any pointers/advice further to this thread?

Good point. Though I'm in two minds -- the head gasket, timing belt, fan belt, thermostat, lambda sensor and now a coolant piping have been replaced. At this point there's not much else that could go wrong (though it still does), and looking at cars for £1500, will I be getting myself into a whole new world of shit if I get another? This is why I'm thinking about keeping this 'til March, then not having a car until my placement year begins -- at which point I'll be able to afford to lease a decent new car. If it breaks then it's not my problem.

If you've got £1500 to spend, get an old Yaris. They're the safest bet at that price.

My first car was an X reg yaris with 115000 miles on the clock, and it lasted me over a year and another 15K miles with no problems.

Currently got a Rover 25, with the head gasket done. They are supposed to be pretty reliable after that -- bollocks. Considering getting a 1.3 diesel Corsa or K11 Micra because spares are basically free.

Are you aware of the cheapness (purchase and insurance) and general reliability, of the common MX-5?
Only two seats, if that's an issue, but with the top down the carrying capacity approaches infinity. Shelves and wardrobes are both possible. They're also pleasant to drive, and very rarely engender anger in other road users. Would recommend.

You know if you aren't 17 and don't want to drive round in a shitbox, you can get a used Focus for next to nothing. Plus the insurance is cheap as chips because all the numpties are out crashing their limited edition Corsas.

That was my motivation behind the Rover 25 -- insurance was barely over a grand (with a tracker), and it's slightly better built than a Corsa.

the looks I get at work for driving an E93 M3 are crazy.

more annoying than the 15mpg I get

meant to say that it's still wrong for 90% of people, but there are those who just commute and drive incredibly slowly and still drive correctly, not sloppy and slow will benefit from a tracker

however the rest of us cunts that want to do burnouts and the lights in a 40mph zone and hoon through the countryside, they're stupid to get.

Because I'm not fucking loaded mate. I am getting rid of it as soon as it's cheap enough but I don't see why I should spend £2000+ on first year insurance. I'd rather deal with the tracker for a year or two, save £2000, thenwith the savings, get a decent car without the tracker. It's not that restrictive, anyway -- I've done 85+ on the motorway and still got 100/100 for the speed score.

The cheapest non-tracker insurance was 1700, and that included no extras. The tracker came with windscreen cover, heavily discounted RAC cover (which I had to use yesterday) and courtesy car. I don't like being tracked, but I want to be shafted as little as possible.

How much did you save by having the tracker though? I thought it would dramatically reduce it for a new driver (especially teenagers), but by how much? If £1700 was without a tracker, how much are you paying with a tracker?

£1150. The cheapest insurance with courtesy car and other stuff was about £2000. The £1700 was the 'Hastings Direct essentials'.
the £600-1000 I've saved has paid for all the fucking problems this pile of wank has caused me. I'm a good driver, too, so if I have another year with the tracker I'll probably get it below £800.

Absolutely do this. When my car was about to catastrophically fail an MOT I smashed into the back of someone else so at least I got a partial refund. The insurers won't suspect a thing, m8.
