It's kicking off in Russia.

The video that started it is a really good watch (English subs available):

I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but this is very interesting to watch considering Catherine Belton's 'Putin's People', and the fact that a great many of the Conservative Party's largest donors are Russians with links to the Kremlin.

A lot of the recent behaviour that is called 'Chumocracy' by the newspapers is almost identical to what bureaucrats were doing in Russia immediately following the breakup of the USSR.

I bet we'll be able to discuss this matter with more intellectual honesty than the one about American oligarchy, at least.

Are the Russian elections fraudulent? Usually it's obvious to tell when they are, observers will report widespread problems, or one nation after another will refuse to recognise the results, but with Russia it seems like either they really are a reflection of how much the population actually like Putin, or he's just miles better than anyone else at getting away with cheating.

My mum has a Russian friend who lives in Britain, and who says the people actually support Putin greatly, and that the majority feel that the West can just fuck off.

Just one opinion, mind. In reality, you can't explain away all the protests with that. And you can't in all honesty believe Putin's exorbitant official approval ratings.

>Are the Russian elections fraudulent?

Yes, and they aren't even subtle about it. Putin could almost certainly win a legitimate election by a comfortable margin, but he wants people to know that the elections are a charade.

Blatant ballot-stuffing is a power play, like using weird poisons on dissidents or throwing scientists and spies out of windows - there's a thin veneer of deniability, but everyone knows who did it and why. In a country that is haunted by the chaos and misery of 1991, a huge part of Putin's appeal lies in his total stranglehold on power. He's a democratically-elected dictator, because that's what the majority of the Russian people want.

Putin wins in part because of controlled opposition. Most of the opponents he allows take a section of the electorate, which fracturing prevents any of them in particular from gaining enough momentum to pose a serious challenge. The only prominent figure that has shown any likelihood of building broad support is Navalny, and ... you know the rest.

I knew, I knew someone would post this video of a polling station, as if it proves anything in isolation.
I'd already seen it.

My question wasn't 'does fraud happen' or 'is Putin corrupt', evidently it does and he is. My question was whether the elections are fraudulent, i.e. as a whole.

>Independent analysis suggests, however, that Panfilova’s assertion that these [2018] elections were cleaner than 2012 are true. Russian physicist Sergei Shpilkin, who has used in-depth statistical analysis to highlight falsified votes in previous elections, found that vote falsification was likely at a record low. Or at least on par with falsifications seen in Putin’s 2004 election, with about 8 million falsified votes.

Best for him to avoid getting anywhere near a window on one of the upper floors of that prison.

Those Russian windows are dangerous, I tell you.
