Check shirts are everywhere, and most are a bit too bright/gaudy for me.
This makes it difficult to find a nice check shirt with a subtle pattern, especially in a nice burgundy/black/dark colours only. Can anyone recommend me a shop that may carry such an item?
The picture is about the closest I've found, and even that's more like a big plaid.
I've had a similar problem finding shirts to wear that aren't completely terrible.
The only thing to do is to shop around, you might find the one nice shirt for each retailer if you're lucky.
Try these guys
http://www.ewm.co.uk/men/shirts.html although check the size charts before you buy, they seem to be a lot bigger than high-street sizes.
Cheers, I quite like heritage-like brands. I have considered going another route though, since patterns are so popular I might just go with a different kind of weave shirt. Twill shirts generally have a nice texture, and they make a break from the trend.
May even go with something like cord if it looks nice enough.

Picture related. However, I can't seem to find a single bloody one that doesn't feature contrasting pockets/come in a large size/cost £85/come from Hong Kong.
Gets a bit tiresome, sometimes. Shops get saturated with one style and it's suddenly very difficult to find anything else. I'll let you know of my journey, /poof/ters. I might even scour some charity shops just to see if I can get lucky.
Checked shirts are shit. At best you look like a picnic blanket, at worst you look like a Mumford and Sons fan.
A subtle neutral check is perfectly acceptable in the country if paired with some moleskins, Hunters and a Barbour, otherwise they're a complete faux pas.
Get yourself to Lewins or Tyrwhitts (Pinks if you're feeling flush) and get yourself half a dozen fitted shirts in white, half a dozen in pale blue and half a dozen in various stripes and subtle patterns. Barrel cuff obviously, French cuffs make you look like a spiv unless you're in evening dress. Then never think about shirts again.
I'm actually a bit of a /poof/ all around, so I have a nice selection of solid colour shirts, don't worry. I thank you for the recommendations, but right now I'm just looking for a bit of variation in my casual shirts.
It's worth having a look instore at h&m. I bought a lovely mustardy sort of colour check shirt in their a couple of years ago. Not gaudy at all. I still regularly wear it.
Though that been said, I've not seen any other nice shirts in h&m since.
