I need a new pair of laces for my work shoes. Should I get coloured laces instead of black ones or would I look like a bit of a twat?

If you need to ask, you're probably not stylish enough to carry it off.

That probably depends on the colour. Most people should be able to get away with a lilac or dark blue. Perhaps not so for a bold colour like yellow.

It's also going to help if it's vaguely complementary with the rest of your clothes.
If you're wearing blue shirts every day, blue laces are probably okay. If you've got a selection of blue, lilac, red, pink and chequed shirts, stick with black laces.

It'll only work if you happen to be wearing something complimentary every day. Them blue laces in the picture would look great if you had the same colour tie or shirt or even a watch with a blue dial, but when you're wearing your red tie you'll look like a mong. Easily remedied by multiple sets of laces, but on the other hand, black goes with everything.

As >>5844 says, honestly, if you're unsure about it, you're almost certainly going to do it wrong and look odd.

Not OP but I really wish I was one of those people who can dress utterly randomly and end up somehow looking good through sheer confidence. I just look tryhard if I get experimental.

Those people don't exist, I guarantee the people you're thinking of have highly cultivated looks.

Socks too. Why is nobody wearing socks any more and wearing short trousers to show off their ankles like it's some kind of Victorian protest? Looks daft as all hell.

I get bad foot odour and quite like wearing short running socks. They never smell and are comfortable around the ankles. I'm quite odd in some ways, I also wear a Fitbit just because I like it yet I smoke 15 cigarettes a day.

But without socks the foot odour just lives directly on your feet and in your shoes.

You can buy low socks that just go over the feet, but not the ankles.
