13433 Dear Points of view; regarding your word filters
Why oh why, oh why is there a word filter on 'arab', all it does is fuck up the word unbearable.

Sincerely

Can we just get rid of all word filters already? They're becoming less and less funny and more and more of an annoyance.

I think that's deliberate, like a Stewart Lee routine.

Basically, the shape-shifting reptilians are massive racists.

They only apply wordfilters to brown folk and feminists in an effort to belittle them and dehumanise them because they see them as lesser people.

Just want to register my support for wordfilters. I still find them amusing and I think it highlights the repetitiveness of some of the debates on here quite well.

You might, but they are fucking tiring to say the least.

It's a bit eye-opening knowing that one shitposter can win by ruining the board for everyone through enforced oh-so-clever word filters.

Just ban people who are being idiots, and don't punish the rest of us if we want to use certain words correctly. Christ.

"Arab" probably needs to go as there are a bunch of words in which it can be found - declarable, comparable/incomparable, inseparable, parable, scarab, etc etc.

>they are fucking tiring to say the least.
If you are finding the wordfilters tiring then they're doing their job. From what I've seen over the years, they get put in place because certain topics get discussed to death and the cunt-offs start edging into and derailing unrelated threads. Wordfilters dissuade people from this behaviour and they seem pretty effective.

What about meeting in the middle? Word-filters for words that have a higher propensity that lead into cunt-offs?

The other filters for really benign words are really a sign of pedantic nannying.

I think the fact that they piss some people off so much is also part of the appeal. For me at least. Getting worked up over something as insignificant as a wordfilter on an imageboard seems inherently absurd.

I don't really see how it in any way "ruins" the board and I also like the unintended consequences of some wordfilters even when it renders a post into incomprehensible gibberish. In fact that is one of my favourite things about them.

Sage for being a cunt.

To be honest I enjoy the Eskimo based word filtering and how posters (or maybe just me) make their own filters\jokes on the theme. As a plus it probably keeps all the Ice-laplanders away.

Perhaps if we just stuck with a couple of terms and the rest be left to our own imagination. There is after all fine line between a quick laugh and rendering a post unreadable.

Yeah I should be able to describe a man of laplanderstani origin. Its not accurate to lump to Sami in with Eskimo given they have a drastically different historical lifestyle of Reindeer herding.

In fact its all quite interesting, apparently a few Sami and reindeer were brought over to Greenland to teach the natives peoples a new industry. Its quite unusual to see isolated native peoples using the shape-shifting reptilianern world to share technology and ways of life like that and I bet someone could write a decent research paper on it.

I agree with you that the majority of them are fine. I also agree with the OP that the unguarded 'arab' filter is a bit much, interfering as it does in normal posts that have nothing to do with the Inuit whatsoever. That's really the only one that needs fixing.

The argument that word filters keep boring topics from being discussed is demonstrably false. If you analyse all of the words used on this website, you would find that the word filters don't pop up anymore frequently than other words such as piss and fucking and working and tea do. The truth is, some people on here just don't want certain topics discussed because it offends their sensibilities. I want the chair wordfilter back.

Sorry, I worded it badly. The topics they claim are discussed far too much, aren't discussed that much at all. The most popular wordfilter, 'crayfish' turns up 47 times (which is a lot lower than many other words such as fucking, working, women, sex, police, piss, kids and morning)

If anything, we should have a wordfilter for all of those things rather than the political words because those are what we statistically discuss the most. They are all mentioned 300-600 times whereas dolphin rape isn't mentioned that often but is being censored for some reason.

They aren't wordfiltered because we talk about it too much, they're wordfiltered because it annoys someone.

So what you're saying is that the word filters don't prevent certain topics from being discussed a lot because they're not discussed a lot. Right.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing as to the purpose of the filters but you seem to have a thinking problem.

Nope, I'm saying that they aren't discussed that much regardless of the word filters. Someone just doesn't like to see serious discussion about politics so they make ridiculous allusions to Siberian cultures for some reason. Humour maybe?

People in this thread are saying wordfilters are used because of the repetitiveness of these arguments but there are other topics which are more repetitive that aren't wordfiltered at all.

As 1984 says, If you want to control an agenda you censor language.

I think I would rather that blatant rules were stamped on topics of 'None of that shit' rather than faux freedom. I like my authoritarian policies out in the open for all to see.
