I installed MacOS Mojave tonight.

We were years ahead of our time lads. Dark mode rules.

Welcome to several years ago, lad.

Still, nothing beats that late '90s grey comfiness. I've not actually tried visiting .gs from my PowerMac G4/OS9.2.1 yet, I'll get on that next time I can access it.

I also have a Powermac G4 (they're strangely very heavy compared to modern computers). Wonderful machine at the time. Not sure the flat panel display works any more, but it's safely stored in the garage as a future project.

That does look nice. I'm looking forward to enjoying it once Apple sort themselves out again and bring out a good Macbook.

Oddly enough, while Classilla renders thje page better, it simply refuses to let me change into Luddite mode, so IE5 wins this round. Annoyingly, OS 9 saves screenshots in the archaic .PICT format, meaning I have to use PhotoShop 7.0 to resave as a jpg and it's all a bit much for this 400MHz CPU.

OS 9 has some really weird paradigms, too. The file system is completely baffling , it doesn't seem to have scroll wheel support, and changing between programs is done by a little button at the top right.

Turns out that Classilla blocks JavaScript by default and you have to manually allow it on all domains. Explains that, then. Still, we now know that Brian is compatible with Mac OS 9.2.1/IE5.

Also Jesus Christ OS9 is bad at multitasking.

I am disgusted, .gs. Disgusted but not surprised.

Install Arch Linux.

OS X straddles the line between useful, streamlined gloss and core UNIX functionality. It is, in many ways, the best OS for professionals from lots of different fields.

Their hardware is fucking shit right now, though. Touch Bar my arse.

Do I really see NoScript icon there? On what would be the status bar in Windows.

You really do. Classilla is a 'modern' browser for OS 9.

The fact that modern JS such as Jquery works (for a given value of "work") on IE5 baffles the honest shit out of me.

> Also Jesus Christ OS9 is bad at multitasking.

If memory serves original MacOS was a single tasking OS like MSDOS but masked that fact the way that installing Windows 3.1 masked it on MSDOS. Either way the performance was lousy compared to a true multitasking OS.

OS 9 uses co-operative multitasking, whereby the OS waits for each individual process to `give up control' of the CPU so it can allow another to run. If the program doesn't give up control, then you're up shit creek.

Windows 95 onwards used pre-emptive multitasking (at least in 32-bit mode), where the OS can forcibly wrest control of the CPU from a program.

That's the word I'm looking for, and it's the same model Win 3.1 used. As you say, if a program goes rogue you're up shit creek. I do not miss those days (except I do miss MS-DOS a bit, just a bit).
