2919 Sit-to-stand desk adjustments
I quite like the position and height of my desk but would like to stand sometimes, so I thought a sit-to-stand solution would be ideal. These can run a bit expensive, though, like the pictured for about 400 GBP.

Do you lads have any good cheap options or DIY solutions for this?

There are few options on the usual popular markeplaces for under £100, too many to list, but have a look for "Standing Desk".

If it's for a laptop that doesn't necessarily have to be on a desk all the time, there are also some height-adjustable stands with rotating cantilever arms, so you could work from a sofa if office chair-induced numb-bum is a concern.

The option that I've found to be most effective though, is a stack of leather-bound encyclopaedias.

Have you considered digging a small hole in your floor and just using your existing desk?

I've decided I'm going to build one myself out of some old shelves. I might even post a picture when it's finished, if you both want to see it. I'm quite optimistic.

Please take photos of your progress, and assemble them into a slide show on youtube, accompanied by a Kevin McCleod song.

I honestly can't tell whether this is some sort of cliché I should avoid or a sincere and highly specific request.

I will do my best.

Be sure to whipe the dust off them from time to time, aey?

Go for it man. I've been considering the same lately. The best i can come up with involves a lot of wooden pegs.

I'm not sure how it's termed, but a bit of frantic googling to make sure it wasn't something I just dreamt up lead me to these:

That first video is wonderful. How would you sink the beams, simply dig them in a foot, with preservative to resist rotting? Would a metal cap or spike be necessary?

Well lads, i done it. An old bookcase has become a raised desktop platform, useful as a standing desk. The project began as hammered together pallet wood (pictured, floor), after my computer chair sponateously broke. By far this is not my best work, having forgotten to sink the screws and cut some lengths wonkey, but the piece is a solid bit of furniature. Next time i will make a lower surface for the keyboard, as it's faily uncomfortable to use roughly an inch above elbow height.

If not homemade, i would highly recommend everyone consider using a standing desk. The necessity of this one has significantly changed my lifestyle. It is much harder to sit here and wank without purpose. My use of the computer is considerably more productive, as i actually have to will myself to stand at it. I could manage only an hour before my feet ached too much, but now i can do maybe 4 hours strait. I come and go from the screen regularly, even bugun stretching (it doesn't take long to see progress - go on, touch your toes! I just did! Infact I can literally starjump between sentances). I have begun dancing to music.

One consideration against is my hips and legs seem to be developing some deep mucle/bone pain, though i believe this was began around the time my chair collapsed. I don't think standing excessively is the root cause, as sitting for too long now hurts my joints instead. Still, it's something to be aware of.

I'm confused. What about if you want to sit?

That's the point - If i want to use the computer I have to stand. If I want to sit, i turn off or break from the computer. As i struggled to elucidate previously, this has led to much more productive use of the desktop as I now have to decide if it's worth standing for - evidently 9gag, 4chan and britfa.gs are not.
As i'm currently stood, i could push out an hour of productive work before having a rest on the sofa. This is much preferable in the long term than allowing myself luxourious comfort to simply play videogames and wank into.

Well that's not going to last. That monitor will be back down on the desk before the month's out.

It was a tossup between Scifi Throne and Office Wank - after 15 weeks at a standing desk, with up to 8 hours maximum stretch, I stuck with what I know and went with the latter. I still have the monitor up high and with wireless peripherals - I hope to continue using the standing function from time to time. My back hurts.
