4374 Dissertation time
Any other finalists have an impending dissertation deadline?

Mine is Friday, but I'm pretty much done with it, getting it bound tomorrow.

Otherwise, last-minute panic thread.

Mine was last week. Definitely get it bound early, there was a huge queue for mine and I only managed to submit it 2 minutes before the deadline.

Yes I figured getting in early would be best. Plenty of last-minute larrys in this year's cadre of History finalists.

I've got to that point where I've revised/edited/polished it so many times I can't even look it anymore. It is as good as it is going to be.

I did my whole project in the month before the deadline and didn't even have time to proofread...

My deadline was last week of march.

Presentation is next tuesday though, and I should probably rehearse it instead of making it up as I go along like normal

My dissertation's in for Monday, but I pretty much have it finished. Just 100 words over the word limit and I'd like to cut it down.

This may seem stupid, but what exactly does binding a dissertation involve?

Depends on your uni. Sometimes they might ask for professional binding but usually that's just for a phd.

It'll probably be ringbinding instead, a lot of printers and stationary stores have a binding machine you can use for little charge, and your university has probably got some you can use for free. It's just a machine that punches holes down the edge then you attached a clippy thingy.

I used my departments machine. It was an ancient thing and we were only allowed to punch 5 pages at a time.

You'll be fine.
By the time I finished my conclusion, I found to my horror that I was 900 words over the limit. Took a day or two but now I'm under - it is easier than you think to strip out unnecessary words/sentences etc.

In for next Monday, not even 10% done yet.
Still shamefully procrastinating.

I already submitted and I just realised all my references somehow got scrambled before printing. Expecting to get called in for plagiarism now.

Call *and* email one of your tutors first thing Monday. If you have a record of this (email), you should be fine when it comes to any tribunal. Plagiarism is when you are actively seeking to get away with it.

800 words in, 9200 more to do by Thursday.

OH WELL.

If I can't get it done on time I'll see if they'll give me a little extension. 50% sure I'll be able to get a passable piece of work in on time.

Good luck lads, soon it will be our last, greatest day.

If you've already got all the project work done, writing it down shouldn't be that much effort.

If you're really pushed for time though and you're only aiming for a pass grade, you could always just use up the 'overtime' (assuming your uni uses the same system as mine whereby submissions up to a week late are capped at the minimum pass mark).

Anyone doing their vivas (oral exams) this week? Mines tomorrow, I'm shitting a brick. It's much easier to bullshit in an essay, as opposed to in front of two historians.

I had mine a couple of days ago. I was nervous beforehand but found I could actually defend myself pretty well. If your essay is genuinely 50 pages of you bullshitting then you will get called out on it, but you've probably absorbed more than you realise.

Fellow historian here. My viva voca was non-point bearing, and so no stress at all.

Where you at?

Wasn't bad at all in the end. I got to listen one lads (through the door) before I went in, and he was a bit of a mess, so that made me feel better going in. Propranolol helped, too.

Anyone got their results? I somehow managed to get a first. 70%. I only spent a week on it as well, which is mad. 72 on the actual paper, and 65/62 in the viva and report.

I know they're not as meaty as dissertations, but I know a couple of people who bashed their independent studies out in less than a week. They based it on what they did on their placement years, but they made all of their results up. I think they both got firsts.

I spent a week on the whole thing. It was about eighteenth century piracy. My tutor, a maritime historian, hated me because I never turned up to meetings or the practice vivas, and is a pretty harsh marker apparently. In the end though he seemed pretty impressed. So I'm very pleased.
