I'm in a bit of a panic here.

I received a letter from student finance saying I was not eligible for any maintenance loans or grants because I'm on an equivalent level qualification. I had called them up previously to ensure I would be eligible for grants and loans a few months ago and they say I would be.

My course is a Foundation Degree Top Up to Honours. I've just finished two years of the foundation degree at a local college and was preparing to move over to university. If I am to study in a new city there is no way I can afford accommodation without loans or grants.

Student finance website assures me I'll get a loan/grant but after chatting to the call centre operator he told me that the Top Up degree (while still equivalent to an Honours) is not a BA Hons which is having me a bit confused as I was convinced the top up was basically a BA Hons. I've contacted my college lecturer about this but I don't think he'll reply to my email as he's known for taking his time with emails. I was told I can write an appeal to formal_appeals@slc.co.uk but I don't have the first idea on how I can appeal their decision.

Long story short SLC have fucked me over and I had made great plans to get into university.

Contact the Student Services department at the university you will be studying at. They might be able to help you.

I've spoke to the university and we've made an appointment. But this really shit me up because all I've done the last few months is prepare for all this and I was shit-scared that it was all for nothing.

This still doesn't confirm anything though and it's entirely possible that I'd be stuck at square one.

There is no use worrying about what you're going to do until you know the full facts. Sit tight.

Well there's two options.
1. everything is fine and everything goes to plan
2. I have to withdraw the finance application, the UCAS application, beg for my old job again, return the laptop I got just for university and likely feel a bit depressed about the whole thing.

I also feel a little down that going for a BSc doesn't entitled me to the grants/loans but a BA does.

As a bit of closure I trekked up to the university I'm going to and had a chat with their finance department. Fortunately they got to talk to a tier 2 operator who could actually do something.

I log into my finance account today and they sent off a declaration with full funding. The only issue I can see is that I should be on the special support grant rather than regular maintenance grant and in the declaration letter in the correspondence history says I'm on the maintenance grant. I am wondering whether I should just say fuck it and allow it as the grant is rather generous but I don't want to have any problems in the future with somebody saying I should be on SSG and cutting off the regular grant.

I suppose thanks is in order either way as simply writing it down on an anonymous imageboard calmed me down as I was in a panicky state so thanks lads.

Don't quote me on this but I think the SSG is in addition to the regular grant not instead of. They might be calculating it as we speak.

https://www.gov.uk/student-finance/loans-and-grants
>You may get a Special Support Grant instead of a Maintenance Grant if you get or qualify for Income Support or Housing Benefit. The amount you get is the same as the Maintenance Grant, but it won’t reduce the Maintenance Loan you can get.

Unless they're going to drop an extra grand I just don't care anymore and just want the whole thing sorted. Apart from the current contents of my bank account I have about two and a half grand-ish to spend on living costs from what I get with the loan and grant after spending the remaining on accommodation. Was more or less the same cash my brother had left over when he went to uni so hopefully I should be able to survive.

This is probably far too late to be helpful.

If you are entitled to SSG you really need to sort that out. 50% of Maintenance Grant is take into account and deducted from the Maintenance Loan you can get based on household income, SSG isn't taken into account and you get all of the loan.

If you are entitled to SSG that indicates you may be able to get Housing Benefit, which will pay for rent even in student accomodation. SSG is disregarded as income for HB so only your Maintenance Loan (plus any other earnings/income) would be considered.

Its really bad how patchy the advice available about Student Finance is and that they just take so long to sort things out.
