In my effort to be practical and put a price tag on what I want out of life, I've found that it's well above what I could ever expect to earn in my current career.

I ask here on .gs because it's a fair spread of surprisingly like minded people.

I don't know if I qualify in quite the way you want, but I run my own brick and mortar business and do alright by it, especially considering I'm still under 30.

All I know is once you earn about £40k a year you can have basically everything you want, unless you're hellbent on buying solid gold toilets and the like.

Myself and some very seasoned firm makers are looking for funding for a film. Our rough basemark is 500k - can be provided in large lumps, not one person providing all of it.

As I believe British films qualify you for massive tax avoidance maybe one of you lads is interested. Obviously this would be arranged legally, professionally and formally and all.

It is horrific to be poor in the UK and it is very difficult to build capital and wealth from a position of disadvantage. The opportunities wealth gives you is enormous. And I am saying this as someone who is relatively wealthy.

For what it's worth, though, there is pretty good evidence that in terms of general health and quality of life, the middle classes in poorer countries are far better off than many of the poor working class in the United Kingdom, despite earning far less overall. Even when adjusted for purchasing power, a big part of avoiding destructive behaviours and advancing socially is about being able to meaningfully participate in society. This is backed up by sound public health research.

My unsupported personal opinion: wealth seems to act like a multiplier to other factors like education and decent work.

Convincing the average Briton that they're very wealthy because only whatever everyone in Britain already has in abundance counts as wealth has been an astonishingly successful strategy in getting Britons to put up with truly monumental amounts of bullshit.

I didn't say everywhere in the tropics is a paradise. The point I was trying to make is that there are plenty of very poor places (uncontacted tribes, Pacific islands, etc.) where people live very happily from the cradle to the grave, in spite of the lack of creature comforts. Maybe uncontacted tribes could enjoy their open air zoos through ignorance but the rates of homicide and domestic violence in such societies is not something I'd be comfortable with. They don't always seem so keen either given contact with civilization fucks them up not just from unsavoury influence but because people naturally leave for a better life even if its somewhere ghastly like Papua New Guinea.

Decades of research on tribes that do get contacted. Unless the fucking Tellytubbies are out there we can draw conclusions of certain norms. As for your next claim, of course certain tribes learn to be hostile to outsiders (e.g. Sentinelese) but it comes from violent contact with unsavoury types.
